Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 6

Short Sound "e"

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Overview

In this lesson children learn the short sound "e". Your mouth opens a little and the short sound "e" comes out quickly. Children say each sound, then push the sounds together into one word, using four word families: ed, eg, en and et. They read four sentences and then complete the activity on page 11.

Learning Objectives

  • Say the short "e" sound
  • Read the word families ed, eg, en and et
  • Push sounds together into words like "bed", "leg", "hen" and "net"
  • Read short sentences with short "e" words
  • Circle the right letter and tick the word that matches the picture

Day 1: Short "e" Word Families (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 10, flash cards for the four families, a picture of an egg

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Say the short "e" as it sounds in "egg". Children say it straight back.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Read: "Your mouth opens a little and the short sound 'e' comes out quickly."
  • Read the rule box: "Say each sound, then push them together into one word."
  • Read the four word families, saying each sound and then the whole word:
    • ed: bed, fed, red, wed
    • eg: beg, leg, peg, keg
    • en: den, hen, men, ten
    • et: net, pet, jet, wet
  • Read the four sentences at the foot of the page:
    • The pen is red.
    • The hen is a pet.
    • Ted is fed.
    • The net is wet.

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • STEAM (Science): Pour water through a sieve into a bowl. What stays in the sieve and what gets through?
  • STEAM (Technology): In a tablet matching game, drag the pictures of a pen, a bed and a net onto their words

Differentiation

  • Support: Practise one family at a time, such as "en": den, hen, men, ten
  • Extension: Children make new words by changing the first letter in a family

Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 11, pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Say a family, such as "et". Children call out words from it: net, pet, jet, wet.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Activity 1: "Read both letters and circle the one that makes the word. The first one has been done for you."
    • The pictures show a pen, a person who is begging, the number 10 and a red splash
    • The first is done: the "p" is circled to make "pen"
    • Children circle the right letter for the others: b (beg), t (ten), r (red)
  • Activity 2: "Tick the word that matches the picture. The first one has been done for you."
    • jet (done), den, net, bed
    • Children tick the matching word in each row

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • Make flash cards for the four families on page 10 (-ed, -eg, -en and -et). Children sort them into piles and read each pile aloud together.

Differentiation

  • Support: Say each picture name aloud before circling or ticking
  • Extension: Children say a short sentence for each word they ticked

Teaching Tips

  • Say the short "e" as it sounds in "egg" and have children say it straight back
  • Sort the flash cards into four piles, one for each family
  • Read the four sentences at the foot of page 10 together
