Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 4
Sight Words
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn sight words. Sight words are the words you learn to read at a glance, without sounding them out. They turn up in nearly every sentence, so knowing them by sight makes reading much quicker. The page groups them by length: single-letter, two-letter, three-letter and four-letter sight words.
Learning Objectives
- Know that sight words are read at a glance, without sounding them out
- Read the sight words on the page
- Choose six sight words and write them
Day 1: Sight Words (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 7, small word cards for the sight words, paper leaves (for the STEAM line)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Hold up the cards "a" and "I". Children read them at a glance.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "Sight words are the words you learn to read at a glance, without sounding them out."
- Read the words in each group together:
- Single-letter: a, I
- Two-letter: am, up, it, we, by, no, in, us, do, on, of, or, as, to
- Three-letter: any, can, too, get, his, him, she, her, had, the, and, for, you, are
- Four-letter: with, from, that, this, went, very, know
- Activity: "Choose six sight words from above and write them here." Children choose six words and write one in each box.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- STEAM (Science): Hunt for "the", "with" and "is" in a storybook, and count how many times each one turns up
- STEAM (Arts): Write six sight words on paper leaves and stick them on a paper tree on the wall
Differentiation
- Support: Choose the six shortest words and read them with the teacher before writing
- Extension: Children say a sentence that uses two of their six words
Teaching Tips
- Show the word, say it, and let children say it back straight away
- Do not sound sight words out. Read them at a glance.
- Sight words turn up in nearly every sentence, so revisit them often
