Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 3
CVC Words
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn about CVC words. A CVC word has three sounds: a consonant, a vowel and another consonant. The example on the page is h-a-t, where h is a consonant, a is a vowel and t is a consonant. Children say CVC words aloud and then write the three letters of each picture word.
Learning Objectives
- Know that a CVC word has three sounds: consonant, vowel, consonant
- Say CVC words aloud, one sound at a time, and blend them
- Say the picture and write its three letters
Day 1: CVC Words (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 6, three blocks or counters per child, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "hat" slowly: /h/ /a/ /t/. Children tap three times, once for each sound.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "A CVC word consists of three sounds: a consonant, a vowel and another consonant."
- Look at the example: h (consonant), a (vowel), t (consonant) makes "hat"
- Say each of these CVC words aloud, one sound at a time, then run the three sounds together:
- fan, mug, jet, fig, dog
- Activity: "Say each picture, then write its three letters in the circles."
- The pictures show a cat, a hen, a pup (a puppy) and a bun
- Do the first one together: /c/ /a/ /t/ = cat. Children write c, a, t in the three circles.
- Children do the others: hen, pup, bun
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- STEAM (Technology): Record yourself saying "fan", "mug" and "dog" on a phone, then tap once for each sound
- STEAM (Engineering): Stack three blocks, one for each sound in "cat". Knock off the first and say what is left.
Differentiation
- Support: Say the three sounds with the child and let them point to one circle at a time
- Extension: Children think of a new CVC word and say its three sounds
Teaching Tips
- Say one word slowly, one sound at a time (/c/ /a/ /t/), then run the three sounds together into the whole word
- Let children do the same with every word on the page
- Three-sound words are where reading starts, so give children time
- For the puppy picture, accept "pup" or "dog"
