Vowels and Consonants
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford
Overview
In this lesson children learn that five letters of the alphabet are vowels: a, e, i, o and u. Every one of the other twenty-one letters is a consonant. Children say the vowels in order, find the vowel in short words, and then colour vowels red and consonants green.
Learning Objectives
- Name the five vowels: a, e, i, o, u
- Know that the other twenty-one letters are consonants
- Find the vowel in a short word
- Colour vowels red and consonants green
Day 1: Vowels and Consonants (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 5, red and green crayons, paper
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say the five vowels together: a, e, i, o, u. Children say them back in order.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read: "Five letters of the alphabet are vowels." Look at the five coloured carriages on the page: a, e, i, o, u.
- Read: "Every one of the other twenty-one letters is a consonant." Read the consonants together:
- b c d f g h j k l m
- n p q r s t v w x y z
- Read some short words aloud and ask, "Which letter in this word is the vowel?" Everything left over is a consonant.
- Activity: "Colour every vowel red and every consonant green." The letters are i, h, g, e, d, o, b, p, u.
- Vowels (red): i, e, o, u
- Consonants (green): h, g, d, b, p
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- STEAM (Arts): Draw an apple and a ball, write the first letter under each, then colour the vowel red
- STEAM (Maths): Count the vowels in your name, then the consonants. Which pile is bigger?
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only the five vowels and colour the vowels first
- Extension: Children find the vowels and consonants in a friend's name
Teaching Tips
