Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 1

Alphabet

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Skillford

Overview

In this lesson children say the 26 letters of the alphabet. Each letter is shown as a big letter and a small letter, like Aa, Bb and Cc. The letters are in rows of colour, and children say each pair aloud, big letter first, then small. They also give the sound of each letter and think of a word that begins with it.

Learning Objectives

  • Say the 26 letters of the alphabet in order
  • Say each pair aloud, big letter first, then small letter
  • Give the sound of each letter
  • Think of a word that begins with each letter

Day 1: Say the Alphabet (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 4, 26 letter blocks or letter cards (for the STEAM line)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Say "A, B, C" and let children say the next letters with you. Stop and ask, "What comes next?"

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Read the instruction: "Say each pair aloud -- big letter first, then small."
  • Work along the rows with the children. Name each letter, then give its sound:
    • Row 1: Aa Bb Cc Dd Ee Ff
    • Row 2: Gg Hh Ii Jj Kk Ll
    • Row 3: Mm Nn Oo Pp Qq Rr
    • Row 4: Ss Tt Uu Vv Ww Xx
    • Row 5: Yy Zz
  • Stop on every letter long enough for someone to offer a word that begins with it
  • Go back over any row that was shaky before you move on to the next

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • STEAM (Engineering): Lay 26 letter blocks in a line from A to Z, take one away, and ask which letter is missing
  • STEAM (Maths): Count the letters in your own name, then find out who in the class has the longest name

Differentiation

  • Support: Practise one row at a time and say only the big letters first
  • Extension: Children say a word for every letter in a row without help

Teaching Tips

  • Always say the big letter first, then the small letter
  • Name the letter, then give its sound
  • Go back over any row that children find hard before moving on
