Revision Plan -- Lesson 21

Letter Uu

Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Skillford

Revision Objectives

  • Recognise the capital "U" and the small "u" and say the sound /u/
  • Recall the words umpire, umbrella, under and up
  • Repeat the sentence "The umpire is under an umbrella."
  • Trace and write "Uu", capital first, then small
  • Revise the whole group, Qq to Uu, with the Let's Practise and Blend to Read pages (textbook pages 58-60)

Revision Activity 1: Under the Umbrella

Time: 4 minutes

  • Open a big umbrella in the middle of the circle
  • Call two learners at a time to stand under it
  • They say "We are under the umbrella!" and the class says /u/ /u/

Revision Activity 2: Point and Say

Time: 4 minutes

  • Open page 56 or hold up picture cards
  • Say a word and learners point to it: umpire, umbrella, under, up
  • Then swap: you point, learners say the word
  • Say the sentence together: "The umpire is under an umbrella."

Revision Activity 3: Air, Sand and Pencil Writing

Time: 6 minutes

  • Draw "U" in the air together: down, round the bottom, back up
  • Draw "u" in the air: down, round, up, then straight down the side
  • Make "Uu" in a sand tray with a finger
  • Write one row of "Uu" on a fresh sheet, capital first, then small

Revision Activity 4: Let's Practise (Textbook Page 58)

Time: 8 minutes

  • Write the letter each picture starts with: say each picture name and learners write the capital and small letter on the lines:
    • ring: Rr
    • snail: Ss
    • strawberry: Ss
    • rhino: Rr
  • Circle the letter each picture begins with: the rose begins with R; the tortoise begins with T
  • Join the pictures that begin with the same sound:
    • rabbit and rhino (/r/)
    • soap and sofa (/s/)
    • tea and tomato (/t/)
    • umpire and umbrella (/u/)

Revision Activity 5: Join and Write (Textbook Page 59)

Time: 6 minutes

  • Learners join each letter to its picture, then write the missing first letter in the gap. Say each word with them:
    • T: truck (_ruck)
    • S: sun (_un)
    • Q: quill (_uill)
    • U: umbrella (_mbrella)
    • R: racket (_acket)
  • Learners write the small letter in the gap, because the rest of the word is in small letters
  • Write the first letter of rainbow, then colour it: learners write "r" (or "Rr") on the line and colour the rainbow

Revision Activity 6: Blend to Read (Textbook Page 60)

Time: 8 minutes

  • Say each sound on its own, then blend them together. Do the first one together: /b/ /u/ /g/, bug
  • Work down each column, one word at a time. Learners say the sounds, blend, then write the word on the line with your help:
    • ug: bug, mug, rug
    • un: bun, run, sun
    • ut: nut, hut, cut
    • ub: cub, tub, sub
  • Point to the picture each time so learners can check the word
  • This is a first try at blending; praise every attempt and do not expect learners to read on their own yet

Key Points to Remember

  • The letter "u" says a short /u/, as in umbrella and up
  • Words from the page: umpire, umbrella, under, up
  • The sentence: "The umpire is under an umbrella."
  • To write "U": down, round the bottom, back up
  • To write "u": down, round, up, then straight down the side
  • Group letters: Qq (/kw/), Rr (/r/), Ss (/s/), Tt (/t/), Uu (/u/)
  • Always write the capital first, then the small letter
