Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 18
Letter Rr
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Skillford
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Rr". Learners meet the big capital "R" and the small "r" and learn the sound /r/. They look at a picture of a boy called Rameez playing with a racket under a rainbow, with rockets flying in the sky, and name a rabbit and a rhino. On the second day they trace and write "Rr", capital first, then small, and circle the pictures that begin with /r/.
Learning Outcomes (from textbook)
- Point to 'Rr' and say the sound /r/.
- Name three things that begin with the sound /r/.
- Trace and write 'Rr', capital first, then small.
Key Vocabulary
- racket
- rabbit
- rhino
- rainbow
- rocket
Speech-Bubble Sentence
- "Rameez is playing with a racket."
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 50
- A real rose
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of racket, rabbit, rhino, rainbow, rocket
- A toy racket and ball, if you have one
- A tablet or screen for a short clip of a rocket launch
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Draw a big "R" in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
- Say the sound /r/ like a little growling puppy: /rrr/
- Learners growl /r/ /r/ /r/ with you three times
Meet the Letter (4 minutes)
- Open page 50 and point to the big white "R" and the yellow "r"
- Say: "This is big R. This is small r." Learners point and repeat
- Tell learners: "Today we will say /r/, find /r/ things and write Rr."
Look and Say (8 minutes)
- Point to the boy and say: "This is Rameez. Rameez starts with /r/."
- Point to the racket and say "racket". Learners repeat and swing a pretend racket
- Read the sentence aloud: "Rameez is playing with a racket." Learners echo it
- Point to the rainbow and the rockets: "rainbow, rocket". Learners repeat
- Point to each side picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- rabbit
- rhino
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Science (5 minutes)
- Pass a real rose around the group
- Let every learner smell it and count its petals with you
- Say together: "rose, /r/ /r/ rose"
Technology (6 minutes)
- Play a short clip of a rocket launch
- Count down from ten with the learners: "10, 9, 8 ... 1, blast off!"
- Watch the rocket go up and say "rocket, /r/ /r/ rocket"
Wrap-Up (2 minutes)
- Ask: "What does rabbit start with?" Learners say /r/
- Learners hop like a rabbit back to their seats
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all five /r/ words without help
Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 50-51
- Coloured playdough
- Pencils and crayons
- A picture of a rainbow (page 50)
Warm-Up (4 minutes)
- Show page 50 again. Point and say: racket, rabbit, rhino, rainbow, rocket
- Say the sentence together: "Rameez is playing with a racket."
Engineering (5 minutes)
- Give out coloured playdough
- Learners roll it into long snakes
- Use the snakes to make the letter "R": one straight line, a bump at the top, then a slanting leg
Trace and Write (10 minutes)
- Open page 51 and let learners run a finger over the big "Rr" at the top
- Show the capital "R": start at the top and go straight down; go back to the top, make a bump round to the middle, then slide a leg down to the bottom
- Show the small "r": start at the middle line and go straight down; go back up and make a little curve over to the right, like a branch
- Hand out pencils and check the grip
- Row 1: look at the model "Rr", then trace each dotted pair, capital first
- Row 2: trace each dotted pair carefully
- Rows 3 and 4: learners write "Rr" on their own, capital first, then small
- Praise every try: "What a strong R!"
Circle the /r/ Pictures (4 minutes)
- Point to each picture and say its name: ring, crocodile, rose, tiger
- Ask: "Does it begin with /r/?" Learners growl /r/ if it does
- Learners circle the ring and the rose
- The crocodile begins with /k/ and the tiger begins with /t/
Arts (4 minutes)
- Colour the rocket at the top of page 51
- As they colour, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "rocket"
Maths (3 minutes)
- Look at the rainbow on page 50 and count its colours together
- Then ask: "Which colour lies at the very top?" (red)
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first "Rr"
- Extension: Let confident learners write "Rr" on the board with a marker
Teaching Tips (from textbook)
- Guide learners to trace and write Rr, starting with a capital letter first, followed by a small letter.
