Letter Dd
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Skillford
Revision Objectives
- Point to capital "D" and small "d" and say the sound /d/
- Name three things that begin with /d/: doctor, dolphin, duck, dog, drum
- Repeat the sentence "The duck and the dog are playing the drum together."
- Trace and write "Dd", capital first, then small
- Revise Aa, Bb, Cc and Dd together using the Let's Practise and Blend to Read pages (Textbook pages 12-14)
Revision Activity 1: Duck Tub
Time: 4 minutes
- Float rubber ducks in a tub of water
- Each learner pushes a duck under, watches it bob up, and says "/d/ /d/ duck"
Revision Activity 2: Point and Say
Time: 4 minutes
- Open page 10 or hold up picture cards
- Say a word and learners point to it: doctor, dolphin, duck, dog, drum
- Then swap: you point, learners say the word
- Say the sentence together: "The duck and the dog are playing the drum together."
Revision Activity 3: Air, Sand and Pencil Writing
Time: 6 minutes
- Draw a big "D" in the air: straight down, back to the top, big curve round
- Draw a small "d" in the air: round like a "c", up tall, straight down
- Trace "Dd" in a sand tray with a finger
- Write one row of "Dd" on a fresh writing sheet, capital first, then small
Revision Activity 4: Let's Practise, Circle the Letter (Textbook page 12)
Time: 5 minutes
- Read the instruction: "Say each picture aloud and circle the letter it starts with."
- Name the six pictures together and say the first sound of each:
- alligator, /a/ (Aa)
- ball, /b/ (Bb)
- cake, /k/ (Cc)
- dolphin, /d/ (Dd)
- bear, /b/ (Bb)
- apple, /a/ (Aa)
- Learners circle the right letter under each picture
Revision Activity 5: Join the Pictures (Textbook page 12)
Time: 5 minutes
- Read the instruction: "Draw a line connecting the pictures that begin with the same letter."
- Find the pairs in the big picture together:
- apple tree and aeroplane (A)
- bus and butterfly (B)
- carrots and cat (C)
- duck and dog (D)
- Learners draw a line between the two dots of each pair
Revision Activity 6: Tick and Join (Textbook page 13)
Time: 6 minutes
- Read the instruction: "Tick the picture whose name starts with each letter."
- A: cat, axe, bear (tick the axe)
- B: balloons, ant, dolphin (tick the balloons)
- C: bear, apricot, cake (tick the cake)
- D: ant, balloons, duck (tick the duck)
- Read the instruction: "Join each letter to its picture, then write it in the
gap."
- apricot, write "a" before "pricot"
- cat, write "c" before "at"
- duck, write "d" before "uck"
- bear, write "b" before "ear"
- Learners write small letters in the gaps because the rest of each word is in small letters
Revision Activity 7: Blend to Read (Textbook page 14)
Time: 6 minutes
- Read the instruction: "Say each sound on its own, then blend them together to read the word. Write it on the line. The first one has been done for you."
- Model the first one: /j/ /a/ /m/, jam
- Blend each word together, slowly then quickly:
- am: jam, dam, ram
- ap: cap, map, tap
- at: rat, mat, hat
- an: fan, pan, can
- Point to the picture after each word so learners check what they blended
- Learners copy the words onto the lines with help; this is the first try at reading, so praise every attempt
Key Points to Remember
- The letter "Dd" says /d/, as in duck and dog
- Words from the page: doctor, dolphin, duck, dog, drum
- The sentence: "The duck and the dog are playing the drum together."
- Capital "D": straight down, then a big curve round
