Overview

This lesson teaches children to answer simple questions with "Yes" or "No". On page 36 they read four questions together, such as "Do you obey your parents? Yes." Then they look at three pictures and answer "Is this a ball?", "Is this a pencil?" and "Is that a boy?" with Yes or No.

Day 1: Let's Read Together (30 minutes)

Materials

• Textbook page 36, two cards: one with "Yes" and one with "No"

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

• Ask: "Are you in the classroom?" Children say "Yes!" Show the Yes card.
• Ask: "Are you a cat?" Children say "No!" Show the No card.

Main Activity (20 minutes)

• Read "Let's read together." Read each question and answer; children repeat:
  • "Do you obey your parents?" -- "Yes."
  • "Do you fight with your classmates?" -- "No."
  • "Do you go to school daily?" -- "Yes."
  • "Do you love your country?" -- "Yes."
• Talk about each one: we obey our parents, we do not fight with our classmates, we go to school daily, we love our country
• Ask the questions again; children nod and say "Yes" or shake their heads and say "No"

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

• Children hold up a Yes or No card as you ask each question

Differentiation

• Support: Let the child answer with the card only, then say the word
• Extension: Children ask a partner one of the questions

Day 2: Activity Time (30 minutes)

Materials

• Textbook page 36, pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

• Ask the four questions from Day 1 again

Main Activity (20 minutes)

• Read the instruction: "Answer the following with 'Yes' or 'No'."
• Read the example: "Is this a ball?" -- "Yes, this is a ball."
• Look at the second picture: "Is this a pencil?" Talk about it. It is a pen, not a pencil. Answer: "No, this is a pen."
• Look at the third picture: "Is that a boy?" It is a bird. Answer: "No, that is a bird."
• Children write the answers. Write them on the board to copy.

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

• Children read the three questions and answers aloud together

Differentiation

• Support: Children write only "Yes" or "No"
• Extension: Children write the full answer

• Use nodding for Yes and shaking the head for No
• Always look carefully at the picture before answering
