Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 15
Use of "These" and "Those"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson teaches children to use "these" for more than one thing nearby and "those" for more than one thing far away. Children read sentences like "These are cubs." and "Those are tigers." and then make their own sentences about pictures.
Learning Objectives
- Say the rule: "These" is used for things (more than one thing) which are nearby. "Those" is used for things (more than one thing) which are far away.
- Read sentences with "These are..." and "Those are..."
- Make sentences about pictures using "these" or "those"
- Link this lesson to "this" and "that" from the last lesson
Day 1: More Than One (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 30, picture cards: cubs, tigers, rabbits, carrots, chicks, eggs, word cards "These" and "Those"
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Hold up one pencil and say: "This is a pencil."
- Hold up three pencils and say: "These are pencils."
- Say: "When there is more than one thing, 'this' becomes 'these' and 'that' becomes 'those'."
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule aloud:
- "'These' is used for things (more than one thing) which are nearby."
- "'Those' is used for things (more than one thing) which are far away."
- Read each sentence and children repeat:
- These are cubs. Those are tigers.
- These are rabbits. Those are carrots.
- These are chicks. Those are eggs.
- Count the animals in each picture to show there is more than one
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Ask: "Do we use 'these' or 'those' for things nearby?" (these)
- Ask: "Do we use 'these' or 'those' for things far away?" (those)
Differentiation
- Support: Let children touch the near picture and point to the far one while they speak
- Extension: Ask children to read a pair of sentences on their own
Day 2: Point and Say (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 30, the same picture cards
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the six sentences from page 30 together
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Put some picture cards on a desk (near) and some at the back of the room (far)
- A child picks a card and says "These are..." if it is near or "Those are..." if it is far
- Swap the cards around and repeat so both words are used
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Show one card, then a card with many. Children say "this" or "these".
Differentiation
- Support: Use only two cards, one near and one far
- Extension: Children say one "These" sentence and one "Those" sentence
Day 3: Make Sentences (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 31
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "These are..." and "Those are..." with groups of real classroom objects
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Look at the pictures and make sentences using 'these' or 'those'."
- Name each picture together: frogs, ants, boys, balloons, horses, camels
- Children say a sentence for each picture, then write it in the box:
- These are frogs. / Those are frogs.
- These are ants. / Those are ants.
- These are boys. / Those are boys.
- These are balloons. / Those are balloons.
- These are horses. / Those are horses.
- These are camels. / Those are camels.
- Accept "These" or "Those" for each picture. The teacher can hold the book close (these) or far (those) to help children choose.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read their sentences aloud
Differentiation
- Support: Write "These are" on the board so children only add the picture name
- Extension: Children write one "These" and one "Those" sentence in their notebooks
Teaching Tips
- Show that "these" and "those" are for more than one thing
- Use real groups of things: touch what is near, point to what is far
- Remind children to use a capital letter at the start and a full stop at the end
