Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, children should be able to:

1. Say when we use "these" and when we use "those"
2. Read sentences with "These are..." and "Those are..."
3. Make sentences about pictures using "these" or "those"

Formative Assessment

1. Near or Far (During Day 1)

• Task: The teacher holds one group card near and puts one far away. The child says "These are rabbits." and "Those are carrots."
• Criteria:
  • Uses "These" for the near card
  • Uses "Those" for the far card
• Rating: Excellent / Good / Needs Practice

2. Point and Say (During Day 2)

• Task: The child picks a card from the desk or from the back of the room and says a sentence
• Criteria: Uses the right word for at least 3 out of 4 cards
• Rating: All correct / Most correct / Needs support

3. Sentence Writing (During Day 3)

• Task: The child writes a sentence for each picture on page 31
• Criteria:
  • Starts with "These are" or "Those are"
  • Writes the picture name correctly
  • Capital letter and full stop
• Rating: Neat and accurate / Satisfactory / Needs improvement

3. Hold up a picture of chicks and say a sentence. (1 mark)
4. Point to a picture of eggs far away and say a sentence. (1 mark)

Part B: Fill in "These" or "Those" (6 marks)

Remediation Plan

• Children who score below 8/16 should:
  • Practise with groups of real objects near and far
  • Read the six sentences from page 30 with the teacher
  • Trace "These are" and "Those are" on dotted lines
