Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 14
Use of "This" and "That"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson teaches children to use "this" for something nearby and "that" for something far away. Children read sentences like "This is a cat." and "That is a squirrel." and then fill in "this" or "that" by looking at the pictures.
Learning Objectives
- Say the rule: "Use 'This' for something which is nearby. Use 'That' for something which is far away."
- Read sentences with "This is a..." and "That is a..."
- Choose "This" or "That" by looking at where a thing is in the picture
- Write "This" and "That" with a capital letter at the start of a sentence
Day 1: Near and Far (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 28, picture cards: cat, squirrel, rabbit, carrot, seagull, pigeon, word cards "This" and "That"
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Hold a picture card in your hand and say: "This is a cat." (nearby)
- Put another card far away on the wall, point and say: "That is a squirrel." (far away)
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule aloud:
- "Use 'This' for something which is nearby."
- "Use 'That' for something which is far away."
- Read each sentence and children repeat:
- This is a cat. That is a squirrel.
- This is a rabbit. That is a carrot.
- This is a seagull. That is a pigeon.
- When children say "This", they touch the card near them. When they say "That", they point far away.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Ask: "Do we use 'this' or 'that' for something nearby?" (this)
- Ask: "Do we use 'this' or 'that' for something far away?" (that)
Differentiation
- Support: Let children hold the near card in their hand while they speak
- Extension: Ask children to say a pair of sentences from the page without help
Day 2: Point and Say (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 28, the same picture cards
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the six sentences from page 28 together
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Place some picture cards on a child's desk (near) and some at the back of the room (far)
- Call children one by one. The child picks a card and says "This is a..." or "That is a..." depending on where it is
- Swap the cards around and repeat so each word gets used
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Play "near or far": say a sentence and children show a hand on the desk for "this" or point away for "that"
Differentiation
- Support: Use only two cards, one near and one far
- Extension: Children say two sentences, one with "This" and one with "That"
Day 3: Fill in "This" or "That" (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 29
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "This" and "That" sentences with real classroom objects
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Fill in the blanks with 'this' or 'that'."
- Explain: big pictures at the front are nearby; small pictures at the back are far away
- Work through each sentence together:
- This is a cat.
- That is a rat.
- This is a cow.
- That is a calf.
- This is a house.
- That is a hut.
- That is a tortoise.
- This is a rabbit.
- Children write the answers in their books with a capital letter
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read the filled-in sentences aloud
Differentiation
- Support: Ask "Is it big and near, or small and far?" before each answer
- Extension: Children copy two sentences in their notebooks
Teaching Tips
- Use real things in the classroom: touch what is near, point to what is far
- Remind children that a big picture in front is near and a small picture at the back is far
- Show that "This" and "That" start with a capital letter at the start of a sentence
