Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 13
Use of "It"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson teaches children to use "it" when we talk about an animal or a thing again and again. Children read pairs of sentences such as "This is a butterfly. It has blue wings." and then fill in "it" themselves.
Learning Objectives
- Say the rule: "When we want to talk about an animal or a thing again and again, we use 'it'."
- Read pairs of sentences that use "This is a..." and "It..."
- Fill in the blank with "It" in the second sentence
- Remember to start a sentence with a capital letter: "It"
Day 1: Reading Sentences With "It" (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 26, picture cards: stove, sweeping brush, squeegee, butterfly, lioness, peacock, word card "It"
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Show each picture card and ask: "What is this?"
- Say the name together: stove, sweeping brush, squeegee, butterfly, lioness, peacock
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule aloud: "When we want to talk about an animal or a thing again and again, we use 'it'."
- Read each pair of sentences and children repeat:
- This is a stove. It is small in size.
- This is a sweeping brush. It is large in size.
- This is a squeegee. It is red in colour.
- This is a butterfly. It has blue wings.
- This is a lioness. It has two cubs.
- This is a peacock. It flies in the air.
- After each pair ask: "Who is 'it'?" (the stove, the butterfly, and so on)
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Hold up the "It" card each time children hear "it" in a sentence
Differentiation
- Support: Read with the picture card in hand so children link "it" to the thing
- Extension: Ask children to read a pair of sentences on their own
Day 2: Things and Animals (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 26, the same picture cards
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Read the six pairs of sentences from page 26 together
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Sort the pictures into two groups on the board:
- Things: stove, sweeping brush, squeegee
- Animals: butterfly, lioness, peacock
- Say: "We use 'it' for an animal or a thing."
- Say the first sentence. Children call out the second one starting with "It":
- Teacher: "This is a lioness." Children: "It has two cubs."
- Teacher: "This is a peacock." Children: "It flies in the air."
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Ask 3-4 children to say a pair of sentences from the page
Differentiation
- Support: Give the first word "It" and let the child finish the sentence
- Extension: Children say both sentences for a picture without help
Day 3: Fill in "It" (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 27, pictures of a fish, penguin, hawk, cat, pomegranate, panther
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show each picture and say its name together
Main Activity (25 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Read the sentences and fill in the blanks using 'it'."
- Read each pair and children write It in the blank:
- This is a fish. It swims in water.
- This is a penguin. It is found in cold regions.
- This is a hawk. It has sharp eyes.
- This is a cat. It has blue eyes.
- This is a pomegranate. It keeps us healthy.
- This is a panther. It runs fast.
- Remind children to write a capital "I" because "It" starts the sentence
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children read the filled-in sentences aloud
Differentiation
- Support: Give dotted "It" for children to trace in each blank
- Extension: Children copy one pair of sentences in their notebooks
Teaching Tips
- Always point to the picture when you say "it" so children see what "it" means
- Show that "It" starts with a capital letter at the start of a sentence
- Praise children who read both sentences smoothly
