Verb
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces verbs. A verb shows action. Children look at sixteen picture cards of people and animals doing actions, say the action words, and then label pictures using a word bank.
Learning Objectives
- Know that a verb shows action
- Name the actions in the book's picture cards
- Act out simple verbs
- Label pictures with the correct verb from a word bank
Day 1: What Is a Verb? (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 21, verb flashcards
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Ask children to stand up. Say: "Jump!" "Run on the spot!" "Smile!"
- Say: "Jump, run and smile are action words."
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rule: "A verb shows action."
- Point to each picture card on page 21 and read the word. Children repeat:
- Row 1: cook, eat, read, write
- Row 2: bark, neigh, amble, roar
- Row 3: fight, crawl, smile, run
- Row 4: sing, ride, paint, jump
- Talk about the animal verbs: a dog barks, a horse neighs, an elephant ambles (walks slowly), a lion roars
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Play "Teacher says" with verbs from the page: cook, eat, read, write, smile, run, sing, jump
Differentiation
- Support: Act out each verb while saying the word
- Extension: Children say a short sentence with a verb, e.g. "I read."
Day 2: Activity Time (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 22, pencils
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Show page 21 again. Point to pictures and children say the verb.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the word bank on page 22 together: cook, cry, sing, bathe, swim, write
- Note: the book prints "bath" in the word bank. Teach and write the action word "bathe".
- Look at each picture and ask: "What is he doing?" "What is she doing?"
- crying boy -- cry
- girl writing -- write
- woman cooking -- cook
- boy bathing -- bathe
- boy singing -- sing
- boy swimming -- swim
- Children write the verb in the box next to each picture
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Check the answers together
- Ask: "What does a verb show?" (action)
Differentiation
- Support: Write the six words on the board for children to copy
- Extension: Children read the six words without help
Day 3: Practice and Review (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 21-22, verb flashcards
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Children act out verbs from page 21. The class guesses the word.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Charades: one child picks a flashcard (cook, eat, read, write, crawl, smile, run, sing, ride, paint, jump) and acts it out. The class says the verb.
- Animal sounds and actions: the teacher says an animal, children say its verb (dog -- bark, horse -- neigh, lion -- roar, elephant -- amble)
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Recap: a verb shows action
- Each child says one verb they did today (eat, write, read, run)
