Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson is a story called "Truthfulness". A cow is caught by a lion in the forest. She promises to come back after feeding her calf, and she keeps her promise. The lion is impressed and frees her. Children listen to the story, answer simple questions, and colour the lion and the cow.
Learning Objectives
- Listen to a short story read aloud
- Talk about the story using the pictures
- Answer simple questions about the story
- Understand the moral: Truth needs no support
- Learn that we should always tell the truth and keep our promises
Day 1: Reading the Story (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 16-17
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Show the pictures on page 16. Ask: "Which animals can you see?" (a cow and a lion)
- Ask: "Where are they?" (in the forest)
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the story slowly, pointing to the pictures:
- The cow went into the forest. She saw fresh green grass and started grazing.
- A lion came and caught her. She cried and said, "Please let me go. My calf is waiting for me. He would be hungry."
- The lion said, "How can I trust you?" He also said, "If I let you go, you wouldn't come back."
- The cow said, "I will be back after feeding my calf." The lion let her go.
- She fed her calf and said, "Goodbye, Son!"
- After an hour, the cow came back to the lion's den.
- The lion was impressed with her truthfulness and freed her. He said, "You can go back. I shall not kill you."
- The cow thanked him and rushed back to her calf.
- Read the moral together: "Truth needs no support."
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Ask: "Did the cow keep her promise?" "Was the lion happy with her?"
- Explain: the cow told the truth, so the lion let her go
Differentiation
- Support: Tell the story again using only the pictures
- Extension: Ask children to say what the cow said to the lion
Day 2: Activity Time (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 18
Warm-Up (10 minutes)

Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Ask the questions on page 18 orally first:
- Where did the cow go? (into the forest)
- Who caught the cow? (a lion)
- Who was waiting for the cow? (her calf)
- Did the lion let the cow go? (yes)
- What happened to the cow in the end? (the lion freed her and she went back to her calf)
- Help children write short answers on the lines. Write key words on the board to copy.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Read the answers together
- Say the moral together: "Truth needs no support."
