Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson teaches children about good habits. Children read eight simple "I" sentences about good habits, talk about the pictures, and match habit sentences to the correct pictures.
Learning Objectives
- Know that good habits are important to be successful in life
- Read and say the eight good habit sentences from the book
- Talk about the pictures using the book's words
- Match habit sentences to the correct pictures
- Follow good habits at home and at school
Day 1: Reading Good Habits (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 14, soap, a toothbrush (or pictures of them)
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Show a toothbrush and soap. Ask: "What do we do with this?"
- Say: "Today we will learn about good habits."
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the opening line: "Good habits are important to be successful in life. Some of the habits are as follows."
- Read each sentence and ask children to repeat:
- "I get up early in the morning."
- "I brush my teeth and take a bath."
- "I wear neat and clean clothes."
- "I trim my nails twice a week."
- "I always help the poor."
- "I wash my hands with soap."
- "I take breakfast on time."
- "I go to school daily."
- Point to each picture and ask: "What is he doing?" Children answer with the book sentence.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children act out a habit (brushing teeth, washing hands). The class says the sentence.
Differentiation
- Support: Read one sentence at a time and point to the matching picture
- Extension: Ask children to say three good habits without looking at the book
Day 2: Activity Time (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 15, pencils
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Read page 14 together again
- Ask: "Which good habits do you do every day?"
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read each statement on page 15 and ask children to find its picture:
- "Take a bath daily." -- boy taking a bath
- "Sleep on time." -- child sleeping in bed
- "Eat vegetables and fruits." -- boy eating an apple
- "Brush your teeth twice a day." -- boy brushing his teeth
- "Exercise daily." -- girl stretching
- Show children how to draw a line from the dot next to the sentence to the dot next to the picture
- Children draw the lines in their books
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Check the matching together
- Ask: "How many times a day should we brush our teeth?" (twice)
Differentiation
- Support: Act out each habit before children match it
- Extension: Children read the five statements on their own
Day 3: Practice and Review (40 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 14-15
Warm-Up (10 minutes)
- Play "Act it out": the teacher says a habit and children act it out
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- In pairs, one child acts out a habit and the other says the book sentence (e.g. "I wash my hands with soap.")
- Make a class "Good Habits" chart. Children choose sentences from page 14 for the teacher to write on the chart
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Recap: good habits are important to be successful in life
- Each child says one good habit they will do tomorrow
Differentiation
