Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 5
Use of "I" and "You"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Overview
In this lesson children learn to use "I" and "You". We say "I" when we speak about ourselves, like "I am a girl." We say "You" when we speak to the person who is listening, like "You are a boy." Children read short sentences and then fill in blanks with "I" and "You".
Learning Objectives
- Use "I" when speaking about ourselves
- Use "You" when speaking to the listener
- Read short sentences with "I am" and "You are"
- Fill in blanks with "I" and "You"
Day 1: I and You (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 10, two cards: "I" and "You"
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Point to yourself and say "I". Point to a child and say "You". Children copy the actions.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rules:
- "'I' is used when we are speaking of ourselves."
- "'You' is used when we are speaking to the listener."
- Read the sentences on page 10. Children repeat and point (to themselves for "I", to a friend for "You"):
- I am a girl. I am beautiful.
- You are a boy. You are naughty.
- I am a teacher. I teach you.
- You are my brother. You play with me.
- Show that we say "I am" and "You are"
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Hold up the "I" card or the "You" card. Children say "I am" or "You are".
Differentiation
- Support: Practise only "I am a girl / I am a boy" and "You are a boy / You are a girl"
- Extension: Children say one "I am" sentence and one "You are" sentence to a partner using words from the book
Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 11, pencils
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Point game: say "I" or "You". Children point to themselves or to a friend.
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Fill in the blanks with 'I' and 'You'."
- Explain: if the sentence says "am", we use "I". If it says "are", we use "You".
- Complete the sentences together:
- I am a kid.
- You are a father.
- I am an accountant.
- You are a manager.
- I am a patient.
- You are a doctor.
- I am a boy.
- You are a girl.
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Children act out pairs from page 11 (patient and doctor, boy and girl) and say the sentences
Differentiation
- Support: Underline "am" and "are" so children can see which word to use
- Extension: Children read all eight sentences aloud without help
Teaching Tips
- Always write "I" as a capital letter
- Point to yourself for "I" and to the listener for "You"
- "I" goes with "am". "You" goes with "are".
