Video Script -- Lesson 4
Use of "A", "An" and "The"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn when to say "a", "an" and "the".
Do you remember the five vowels? A, E, I, O, U. They will help us today.
We use "a" before words that begin with a consonant sound. Listen. A panda. A mango. A carrot. A lion. A cow. Panda, mango, carrot, lion and cow all begin with consonant sounds, so we say "a".
We use "an" before words that begin with a vowel sound. Listen. An impala. An apple. Impala begins with I. Apple begins with A. These are vowel sounds, so we say "an".
Now let us learn about "the". We use "the" before the names of natural things, rivers, holy books and monuments. We say the sun and the earth. These are natural things. We say the Quran. The Quran is our holy book. We say the Badshahi Masjid. It is a famous monument.
Let us try some sentences together. This is an umbrella. Here is an igloo. Here is a dog. I have an orange. The sun is in the sky. The moon shines at night. Well done!
Let us quickly go over what we learned today. We say "a" before a consonant sound, like a cow. We say "an" before a vowel sound, like an apple. We say "the" before natural things, rivers, holy books and monuments, like the sun and the Quran.
Great job, everyone! Listen for "a", "an" and "the" when you speak. See you next time!
