Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 4
Use of "A", "An" and "The"
Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds
Overview
In this lesson children learn when to use "a", "an" and "the". We use "a" before words that begin with a consonant sound, like a panda. We use "an" before words with a vowel sound, like an apple. We use "the" before the names of natural things, rivers, holy books and monuments, like the sun, the Quran and the Badshahi Masjid.
Learning Objectives
- Use "a" before words beginning with consonant sounds
- Use "an" before words beginning with vowel sounds
- Use "the" before natural things, rivers, holy books and monuments
- Fill in blanks with "a", "an" or "the"
Day 1: A and An (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 8, picture flashcards (impala, panda, mango, carrot, lion, apple, cow)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Quick review: "What are the five vowels?" (a, e, i, o, u)
Main Activity (20 minutes)
- Read the rules:
- "Use 'a' before the words beginning with consonant sounds."
- "Use 'an' before the words having vowel sounds."
- Read the picture cards on page 8. Children repeat:
- an impala, a panda, a mango, a carrot
- a lion, an apple, a cow
- For each word, ask: "Does it start with a vowel sound or a consonant sound?"
- Explain: impala and apple start with vowel sounds, so we say "an". Panda, mango, carrot, lion and cow start with consonant sounds, so we say "a".
Wrap-Up (10 minutes)
- Hold up a picture card. Children say "a" or "an" with the word.
Differentiation
- Support: Show the vowel cards a, e, i, o, u next to the pictures to help children check
- Extension: Ask children to say "a" or "an" with words from Lesson 1 (an engine, a goat, an octopus)
Day 2: The, and Activity Time (35 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook pages 8-9, pictures of the sun, the earth, the Quran and the Badshahi Masjid
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Say "apple", "cow", "impala". Children add "a" or "an".
Main Activity 1 -- The (10 minutes)
- Read the rule: "'The' is used before the names of natural things, rivers, holy books and the names of monuments."
- Read the cards: the sun, the earth, the Quran, the Badshahi Masjid
- Explain: there is only one sun, one earth, one Quran and one Badshahi Masjid, so we say "the"
Main Activity 2 -- Fill in the Blanks (15 minutes)
- Read the instruction: "Fill in the blanks with 'a', 'an' or 'the'."
- Look at each picture and complete the sentences together:
- This is an umbrella.
- Here is an igloo.
- Here is a dog.
- I have an orange.
- The sun is in the sky.
- The moon shines at night.
Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- Ask: "When do we use 'an'?" "When do we use 'the'?"
Differentiation
- Support: Say each sentence aloud with all three choices and let children pick the one that sounds right
- Extension: Ask children to name the four "the" cards from page 8 without looking (the sun, the earth, the Quran, the Badshahi Masjid)
Teaching Tips
- Link this lesson to vowels and consonants from Lesson 2
- Use the pictures in the book so children can see each thing
- Say "an" and "a" clearly so children hear the difference
