Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 3

Consonant Blends

Subject: English | Class: Prep | Series: Leeds

Overview

In this lesson children learn about consonant blends. A consonant blend is a group of two or more consonants blended together, and we can hear each sound. Children read blend words like blue, glue, play, clap, crab, grass, drip and train. Then they match pictures to blends and fill in blends under pictures.

Learning Objectives

  • Say what a consonant blend is in simple words
  • Hear both sounds in a blend (for example, b and l in "blue")
  • Read blend words from the book
  • Match a picture to its beginning blend
  • Write the correct blend for a picture

Day 1: Blend Words (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 6, blend cards (bl, gl, pl, cl, fl, sl, cr, gr, pr, dr, fr, tr), word flashcards

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Quick review: "Which letters are vowels?" (a, e, i, o, u) "What do we call the other letters?" (consonants)

Main Activity (20 minutes)

  • Read the definition: "Consonant blend is a group of two or more consonants which are blended together with each sound heard."
  • Explain simply: two consonants stand together, and we say both sounds quickly, like b and l in "blue"
  • Read the blend words on page 6. Say the blend first, then the word. Children repeat:
    • bl: blue, black, blanket
    • gl: glue, glee
    • pl: plot, plan, play
    • cl: clap, clay, climb
    • fl: flap, flip
    • sl: slam, slap, sled
    • cr: crop, crab
    • gr: grab, grass, grey
    • pr: pride, pray, prefer
    • dr: drip, drag, draw
    • fr: fray
    • tr: travel, train, truck
  • Teacher note: the "bl" label is missing under blue, black and blanket on page 6. Write "bl" on the board for children.

Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

  • Say a word (clap, train, grass). Children say the blend (cl, tr, gr).

Differentiation

  • Support: Use only four blends at a time (bl, cl, gr, tr) and act out words like clap and climb
  • Extension: Ask children to clap once for each sound in a blend

Day 2: Activity Time (35 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 7, blend cards, pencils

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Hold up blend cards. Children say one word from the book for each blend.

Main Activity 1 -- Draw a Line (15 minutes)

  • Read the instruction: "Draw a line from each picture to the correct beginning blend."
  • Say each picture name slowly. Children listen for the first two sounds:
    • prince -- pr
    • globe -- gl
    • snail -- sn
  • Teacher note: the girl in the third picture is skipping. "Skipping" starts with s and k, not s and p. Tell children this so they do not match it to "sp".

Main Activity 2 -- Fill in the Blanks (10 minutes)

  • Read the instruction: "Fill in the blanks with the correct consonant blend."
  • Say each picture name. Children write the blend on the line:
    • cloud -- cl
    • bread -- br
    • frog -- fr
    • drum -- dr
    • plant -- pl

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Ask: "What is a consonant blend?" Children answer in simple words: "Two consonants together. We hear both sounds."

Differentiation

  • Support: Say the picture word slowly and stretch the blend: "c-l-oud"
  • Extension: Ask children to say one more book word for each blend in the activity

Teaching Tips

  • Say both sounds in a blend clearly
  • Use actions for words like clap, climb, play and draw
  • Always say the picture name aloud before children choose a blend
