Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 28

Fruits, Vegetables, Animals and Birds

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson uses the four picture rows on page 32. Each row has a coloured label and four photo cards with names. On the first day learners name the Fruits (Apple, Grapes, Orange, Banana) and the Vegetables (Potato, Pea, Ginger, Brinjal). On the second day they name the Animals (Bear, Camel, Deer, Cat) and the Birds (Parrot, Cock, Pigeon, Duck). Learners sort the pictures into the right group. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes

  • Name the four fruits, four vegetables, four animals and four birds on page 32
  • Say which group a picture belongs to: fruits, vegetables, animals or birds
  • Sort real objects or picture cards into groups

Key Vocabulary

  • Fruits: Apple, Grapes, Orange, Banana
  • Vegetables: Potato, Pea, Ginger, Brinjal
  • Animals: Bear, Camel, Deer, Cat
  • Birds: Parrot, Cock, Pigeon, Duck

Day 1: Fruits and Vegetables (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 32
  • Real fruits and vegetables from the page, if possible: an apple, some grapes, an orange, a banana, a potato, some peas, a piece of ginger, a brinjal
  • Two baskets, one marked "Fruits" and one marked "Vegetables"

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up the apple and ask: "What is this?" Learners say "apple"
  • Ask: "Do you like to eat fruits?" Let learners answer

Look and Say: Fruits (6 minutes)

  • Open page 32 and point to the blue "Fruits" label
  • Point to each photo and say the name. Learners repeat twice:
    • Apple
    • Grapes
    • Orange
    • Banana
  • Ask: "Which fruit is yellow?" (Banana) "Which fruit is red?" (Apple)

Look and Say: Vegetables (6 minutes)

  • Point to the green "Vegetables" label
  • Point to each photo and say the name. Learners repeat twice:
    • Potato
    • Pea
    • Ginger
    • Brinjal
  • Ask: "Which vegetable is purple?" (Brinjal) "Which vegetable is small and green?" (Pea)

Little Explorers (8 minutes)

  • Pass the real fruits and vegetables around the circle
  • Each learner holds one, says its name and says "fruit" or "vegetable"
  • The learner puts it in the right basket

Wrap-Up (5 minutes)

  • Play "Point to it": say a name, learners point to the right photo on page 32
  • Ask: "Is a banana a fruit or a vegetable?" Learners say "fruit"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to the photos instead of saying the names; say the name with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four fruits without looking

Day 2: Animals and Birds (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 32
  • Picture cards (or the book photos) of all sixteen pictures
  • Four group cards: Fruits, Vegetables, Animals, Birds
  • Crayons

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show the Fruits and Vegetables rows again. Point and say each name together
  • Ask: "Is a potato a fruit or a vegetable?" Learners say "vegetable"

Look and Say: Animals (6 minutes)

  • Point to the yellow "Animals" label
  • Point to each photo and say the name. Learners repeat twice:
    • Bear
    • Camel
    • Deer
    • Cat
  • Learners act each animal: a big bear, a camel walking slowly, a deer jumping, a cat saying "meow"

Look and Say: Birds (6 minutes)

  • Point to the pink "Birds" label
  • Point to each photo and say the name. Learners repeat twice:
    • Parrot
    • Cock
    • Pigeon
    • Duck
  • Learners flap their wings for each bird. The duck says "quack", the cock says "cock-a-doodle-doo"

Sorting Game (8 minutes)

  • Put the four group cards on the floor: Fruits, Vegetables, Animals, Birds
  • Give each learner one picture card
  • Each learner says the name and puts the card under the right group
  • Check each group together at the end

Colour Time (4 minutes)

  • Learners draw and colour their favourite picture from page 32
  • As they work, ask: "What is it? Is it a fruit, a vegetable, an animal or a bird?"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Say the four group names together: fruits, vegetables, animals, birds

Differentiation

  • Support: Sort only two groups at first (fruits and animals)
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name one picture from each group

Teaching Tips

  • Use real fruits and vegetables wherever you can; touching and smelling helps learners remember the names
  • "Cock" is the word the book uses for the bird with the red comb; use the same word in class
  • The book shows the rows in this order: Animals, Birds, Fruits, Vegetables. Point to the label of each row before naming the pictures
