Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 26
Letter Zz
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Zz", the last letter of the alphabet. Learners look at a picture on page 28 with a striped zeppelin in the sky, a big golden "ZOO" sign over a gate, a zip on a pair of jeans and a zebra. They say the four words, chant the letter box at the top of the page, and learn the rhyme line "z / z / zebra is native to Africa". On the second day they trace "Z" and "z" in the air, on the board and with a pencil. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise the capital letter "Z" and the small letter "z"
- Say the sound /z/
- Name the pictures on page 28: zeppelin, zoo, zip, zebra
- Say the chant and the rhyme line from the letter box
- Trace "Z" and "z" with the correct stroke

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials

- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of zeppelin, zoo, zip, zebra
- A bag or jacket with a zip
- Letter cards Z and z
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up the letter cards "Z" and "z". Say: "Big Z, small z"
- Say the sound /z/ like a buzzing bee: "zzz"
- Ask learners to buzz /z/ with you three times
Little Explorers (5 minutes)
- Pass round a bag or jacket with a zip
- Let every learner pull the zip up and down
- Each learner says "zip" as they pull it
- Say together: "zip, /z/ /z/ zip"
Look and Say (8 minutes)
- Open page 28 and point to the big red "Zz"
- Point to the zeppelin in the sky and say "zeppelin". Learners repeat
- Point to the big golden sign and say "zoo". Learners repeat
- Point to the zip on the jeans and say "zip". Learners repeat
- Point to the zebra and say "zebra". Learners repeat
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Chant Time (6 minutes)
- Point to the letter box at the top of the page
- Say each line slowly and clap on each "z":
- "z / z / zeppelin"
- "z / z / zoo"
- "z / z / zip"
- Learners echo each line twice
- Say the rhyme line together: "z / z / zebra is native to Africa"
Wrap-Up (6 minutes)
- Ask: "Which animal has black and white stripes?" Learners say "zebra"
- Ask: "Which one flies in the sky?" Learners say "zeppelin"
- Learners pull a pretend zip up their front and say "zip!"
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to say the whole chant on their own
Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 28
- Board and marker
- Pencils and plain paper with dotted "Z" and "z" rows
- Black crayons and a zebra outline sheet
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 28 again. Point and say: zeppelin, zoo, zip, zebra
- Say the chant together, clapping on each "z"
- Say the rhyme line: "z / z / zebra is native to Africa"
Little Thinkers (4 minutes)
- Ask: "Where can we see a zebra?" Learners say "zoo"
- Ask: "Where is the zip?" Learners point to the jeans
- Ask: "What colours is the zebra?" Learners say "black and white"
Air and Board Tracing (6 minutes)
- Draw a big "Z" in the air: go across the top, slant down to the bottom left, then go across the bottom
- Learners copy you three times, saying "across, down, across"
- Show that small "z" is the same shape, only smaller
- Invite learners to trace a big "Z" on the board with a finger
Trace and Write (8 minutes)
- Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
- Row 1: trace the dotted capital "Z", starting at the top left
- Row 2: trace the dotted small "z", starting at the top left
- Praise every try: "Lovely zig-zag z!"
Colour Time (6 minutes)
- Give each learner a zebra outline
- Learners colour black stripes on the zebra
- As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "zebra"
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Draw "z" in the air one last time and buzz /z/
- Say: "z is the last letter!" and clap together
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
- Extension: Let confident learners trace a big "Z" on the board with a marker
Teaching Tips
- Buzz /z/ like a bee so learners do not say /s/
- Every stroke of "Z" goes left to right or down; it never goes back up
- The rhyme line has a long word, "native"; say it slowly and let learners join in on "zebra" and "Africa" first
