Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 25
Letter Yy
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Yy". Learners look at a beach picture on page 27 with a white yacht on the sea, a furry yak, two eggs with yellow yolks in a pan and an orange yo-yo. They say the four words, chant the letter box at the top of the page, and learn the rhyme line "y / y / yak lives on high land". On the second day they trace "Y" and "y" in the air, on the board and with a pencil. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise the capital letter "Y" and the small letter "y"
- Say the sound /y/
- Name the pictures on page 27: yacht, yolk, yo-yo, yak
- Say the chant and the rhyme line from the letter box
- Trace "Y" and "y" with the correct stroke
Key Vocabulary
- yacht
- yolk
- yo-yo
- yak
Chant (from textbook)
- "y / y / yacht"
- "y / y / yolk"
- "y / y / yo-yo"
- "y / y / yak lives on high land"
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 27
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of yacht, yolk, yo-yo, yak
- A real yo-yo, if you have one
- A boiled egg cut in half, to show the yolk
- Letter cards Y and y
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up the letter cards "Y" and "y". Say: "Big Y, small y"
- Say the sound /y/: smile wide and say "y" with your tongue pushed up
- Ask learners to smile and say /y/ with you three times
Little Explorers (5 minutes)
- Show the boiled egg cut in half
- Point to the yellow middle and say: "This is the yolk"
- Ask each learner: "What colour is the yolk?" and accept "yellow"
- Say together: "yolk, /y/ /y/ yolk"
Look and Say (8 minutes)
- Open page 27 and point to the big red "Yy"
- Point to the yacht and say "yacht". Learners repeat
- Point to the eggs in the pan and say "yolk". Learners repeat
- Point to the yo-yo and say "yo-yo". Learners repeat
- Point to the yak and say "yak". Learners repeat
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Chant Time (6 minutes)
- Point to the letter box at the top of the page
- Say each line slowly and clap on each "y":
- "y / y / yacht"
- "y / y / yolk"
- "y / y / yo-yo"
- Learners echo each line twice
- Say the rhyme line together: "y / y / yak lives on high land". Learners point up high on the word "high"
Wrap-Up (6 minutes)
- If you have a yo-yo, make it go up and down while learners say "yo-yo"
- Learners move their hands up and down like a yo-yo
- Ask: "What does yak start with?" Learners say /y/
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to say the whole chant on their own
Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 27
- Board and marker
- Pencils and plain paper with dotted "Y" and "y" rows
- Crayons (orange, yellow)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 27 again. Point and say: yacht, yolk, yo-yo, yak
- Say the chant together, clapping on each "y"
- Say the rhyme line: "y / y / yak lives on high land"
Little Thinkers (4 minutes)
- Ask: "Which picture goes on the water?" Learners point to the yacht
- Ask: "Which picture is an animal?" Learners point to the yak
- Ask: "Which picture goes up and down?" Learners point to the yo-yo
Air and Board Tracing (6 minutes)
- Draw a big "Y" in the air: slant down to the middle from the left, slant down to the middle from the right, then go straight down
- Draw a small "y": a short slant down to the middle, then a long slant from the top right going down below the line, like a tail
- Learners copy you three times
- Invite learners to trace a big "Y" on the board with a finger
Trace and Write (8 minutes)
- Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
- Row 1: trace the dotted capital "Y", starting at the top
- Row 2: trace the dotted small "y", starting at the top
- Praise every try: "Lovely y with a long tail!"
Colour Time (6 minutes)
- Give each learner a sheet with a big yo-yo outline
- Learners colour the yo-yo orange like the one on page 27
- As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "yo-yo"
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Draw "y" in the air one last time and say /y/
- Say the rhyme line one more time, pointing up high
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
- Extension: Let confident learners trace a big "Y" on the board with a marker
Teaching Tips
- Small "y" has a tail that goes below the line; show this clearly on the board
- Say "yolk" slowly so learners hear the /y/ at the start
- Keep the chant rhythm the same every day so learners can join in quickly
