Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letters "Y" and "y" when asked
2. Say the sound /y/
3. Name the pictures on page 27: yacht, yolk, yo-yo, yak
4. Say the rhyme line "y / y / yak lives on high land"
5. Trace "Y" and "y" starting at the top

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (y, v, x). Ask: "Where is y?" The learner points to it
• Criteria:
  • Points to "y" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Yy" on page 27 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /y/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. yacht
  2. yolk
  3. yo-yo
  4. yak
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Chant Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: Say "y / y / yak lives on high land." The learner repeats it
• Criteria: Repeats most of the line
• Rating: Whole line / Part of line / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace the "Y" and "y" rows
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the top
  • Small "y" has a tail below the line
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "y" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "y" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 27. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • yacht, yolk, yo-yo, yak

Part C: Chant (2 marks)

• Learner says "y / y / yacht" or "y / y / yo-yo" (1 mark)
• Learner says "y / y / yak lives on high land" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner traces one dotted "Y" and one dotted "y", starting at the top (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 27 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Look at a real egg yolk again and say "yolk" with the teacher

  • Say the chant "y / y / yo-yo" with a parent at home
