Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 24

Letter Xx

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Xx". Learners look at a hospital room picture on page 26 with a doctor holding an x-ray, a colourful xylophone, an xbox and a snowy xmas tree by the window. They say the four words, chant the letter box at the top of the page, and learn the rhyme line "x / x / xmas tree has green branches". On the second day they trace "X" and "x" in the air, on the board and with a pencil. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes

  • Recognise the capital letter "X" and the small letter "x"
  • Say the name of the letter "x"
  • Name the pictures on page 26: x-ray, xylophone, xbox, xmas tree
  • Say the chant and the rhyme line from the letter box
  • Trace "X" and "x" with the correct stroke

Key Vocabulary

  • x-ray
  • xylophone
  • xbox
  • xmas tree

Chant (from textbook)

  • "x / x / x-ray"
  • "x / x / xylophone"
  • "x / x / xbox"
  • "x / x / xmas tree has green branches"

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 26
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of x-ray, xylophone, xbox, xmas tree
  • A toy xylophone, if the school has one
  • Letter cards X and x

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up the letter cards "X" and "x". Say: "Big X, small x"
  • Cross your arms over your chest to make an "X" shape. Learners copy you
  • Say the letter name "x" together three times

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 26 and point to the big red "Xx"
  • Point to the x-ray the doctor is holding and say "x-ray". Learners repeat
  • Point to the xylophone and say "xylophone". Learners repeat
  • Point to the xbox and say "xbox". Learners repeat
  • Point to the tree by the window and say "xmas tree". Learners repeat
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

Chant Time (6 minutes)

  • Point to the letter box at the top of the page
  • Say each line slowly and clap on each "x":
    • "x / x / x-ray"
    • "x / x / xylophone"
    • "x / x / xbox"
  • Learners echo each line twice
  • Say the rhyme line together: "x / x / xmas tree has green branches". Learners hold their arms out wide like branches

Xylophone Music (5 minutes)

  • If you have a toy xylophone, let learners take turns to tap one bar
  • Each learner says "xylophone" after their tap
  • If you have no xylophone, learners tap pretend bars on their knees

Wrap-Up (4 minutes)

  • Ask: "What is the doctor holding?" Learners say "x-ray"
  • Ask: "Which picture has green branches?" Learners say "xmas tree"
  • Cross arms into an "X" and say "x" one last time

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to say the whole chant on their own

Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 26
  • Board and marker
  • Pencils and plain paper with dotted "X" and "x" rows
  • Crayons (green, brown)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 26 again. Point and say: x-ray, xylophone, xbox, xmas tree
  • Say the chant together, clapping on each "x"
  • Say the rhyme line: "x / x / xmas tree has green branches"

Little Thinkers (4 minutes)

  • Ask: "Which picture makes music?" Learners point to the xylophone
  • Ask: "Which picture do we play games on?" Learners point to the xbox
  • Ask: "What colour are the branches?" Learners say "green"

Air and Board Tracing (6 minutes)

  • Draw a big "X" in the air: start at the top left and slant down to the bottom right, then start at the top right and slant down to the bottom left
  • Learners copy you three times, saying "one line, two lines"
  • Show that small "x" is the same shape, only smaller
  • Invite learners to trace a big "X" on the board with a finger

Trace and Write (8 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
  • Row 1: trace the dotted capital "X", starting at the top left
  • Row 2: trace the dotted small "x", starting at the top left
  • Praise every try: "Lovely crossed x!"

Colour Time (6 minutes)

  • Give each learner a sheet with a tree outline
  • Learners colour the branches green, as the rhyme line says
  • As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "xmas tree"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw "x" in the air one last time and say "x"
  • Say the rhyme line one more time, arms out like branches

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
  • Extension: Let confident learners trace a big "X" on the board with a marker

Teaching Tips

  • The four "x" words do not all start with the same sound, so focus on the letter name "x" and its shape rather than one sound
  • Both lines of "X" start at the top. Draw the left-to-right line first
  • Keep the chant rhythm the same every day so learners can join in quickly
