Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the letters "X" and "x" when asked
2. Say the name of the letter "x"
3. Name the pictures on page 26: x-ray, xylophone, xbox, xmas tree
4. Say the rhyme line "x / x / xmas tree has green branches"
5. Trace "X" and "x" starting at the top

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (x, y, k). Ask: "Where is x?" The learner points to it
• Criteria:
  • Points to "x" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Letter Name Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Xx" on page 26 and ask: "What is this letter?"
• Criteria: Says "x" clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. x-ray
  2. xylophone
  3. xbox
  4. xmas tree
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Chant Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: Say "x / x / xmas tree has green branches." The learner repeats it
• Criteria: Repeats most of the line
• Rating: Whole line / Part of line / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace the "X" and "x" rows
• Criteria:
  • Starts both lines at the top
  • The two lines cross in the middle
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter Name (2 marks)

1. Point to "x" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the name of the letter "x" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 26. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • x-ray, xylophone, xbox, xmas tree

Part C: Chant (2 marks)

• Learner says "x / x / x-ray" or "x / x / xylophone" (1 mark)
• Learner says "x / x / xmas tree has green branches" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner traces one dotted "X" and one dotted "x", starting at the top (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 26 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Cross their arms into an "X" shape and say "x"
  • Trace a big "X" in a sand tray or on the board with a finger
  • Say the chant "x / x / xylophone" with a parent at home
