Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 22
Letter Vv
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Vv". Learners look at a big beach picture on page 24 with a colourful van, a vulture, a violin and a basket of vegetables. They say the four words, chant the letter box at the top of the page, and learn the rhyme line "v / v / vegetables make us strong and tall". On the second day they trace "V" and "v" in the air, on the board and with a pencil. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes

- Say the sound /v/
- Name the pictures on page 24: van, vulture, violin, vegetables

- A small basket
- Letter cards V and v
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up the letter cards "V" and "v". Say: "Big V, small v"
- Say the sound /v/ slowly: gently bite your bottom lip and buzz "vvv"
- Ask learners to touch their lips and feel the buzz as they say /v/ with you three times
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Open page 24 and point to the big red "Vv"
- Point to the van and say "van". Learners repeat
- Point to the vulture and say "vulture". Learners repeat
- Point to the violin and say "violin". Learners repeat
- Point to the basket and say "vegetables". Learners repeat
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Chant Time (6 minutes)
- Point to the letter box at the top of the page
- Say each line slowly and clap on each "v":
- "v / v / vulture"
- "v / v / van"
- "v / v / violin"
- Learners echo each line twice
- Say the rhyme line together: "v / v / vegetables make us strong and tall". Learners crouch low, then stretch up tall on the word "tall"
Vroom Van Game (5 minutes)
- Learners hold a pretend steering wheel and drive round the circle
- When you say "van", they stop and say /v/ /v/ van
- Swap to "vulture": learners flap their wings and say /v/ /v/ vulture
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Ask: "What does van start with?" Learners say /v/
- Ask: "Which picture is in the basket?" Learners say "vegetables"
- Wave goodbye to the vulture: "Bye-bye, vulture!"
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to say the whole chant on their own
Day 2: Trace and Write (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 24
- Board and marker
- Pencils and plain paper with dotted "V" and "v" rows
- Crayons
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 24 again. Point and say: van, vulture, violin, vegetables
- Say the chant together, clapping on each "v"
- Say the rhyme line: "v / v / vegetables make us strong and tall"
Little Thinkers (4 minutes)
- Ask: "Which picture can we eat?" Learners point to the vegetables
- Ask: "Which picture can fly?" Learners point to the vulture
- Ask: "Which picture makes music?" Learners point to the violin
Air and Board Tracing (6 minutes)
- Draw a big "V" in the air: start at the top left, slant down to the bottom, then slant back up to the top right
- Learners copy you three times, saying "down, up"
- Show that small "v" is the same shape, only smaller
- Invite learners to trace a big "V" on the board with a finger
Trace and Write (8 minutes)
- Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
- Row 1: trace the dotted capital "V", starting at the top
- Row 2: trace the dotted small "v", starting at the top
- Praise every try: "Lovely pointy v!"
Colour Time (6 minutes)
- Give each learner a sheet with a big outline "Vv"
- Learners colour it red like the letters on page 24
- As they work, ask: "What sound does v make?" Learners say /v/
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Draw "v" in the air one last time and say /v/
- Say the rhyme line one more time, stretching up tall
Differentiation
- Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
- Extension: Let confident learners trace a big "V" on the board with a marker
Teaching Tips
- Model the /v/ sound with a gentle buzz on the bottom lip so learners do not say /b/ or /w/
- The picture labelled "violin" is drawn with a bow; just point and say "violin"
- Keep the chant rhythm the same every day so learners can join in quickly
