Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 21

Letter Uu

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Uu". Learners look at a garden picture on page 23 with a white unicorn with a rainbow mane, a boy in school uniform holding an umbrella, and an urn full of flowers. They say the chant "u / u / unicorn", "u / u / uniform", "u / u / urn" and the rhyme line "u / u / umbrella saves you from the weather". On the second day they find big U and small u, draw the letter in the air and trace it. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes (from the Lesson Planner, page 2)

  • Introduction to Uu
  • Recognition of U used in different words

Key Vocabulary

  • unicorn
  • uniform
  • urn
  • umbrella

Chant and Rhyme Line (page 23)

  • "u / u / unicorn"
  • "u / u / uniform"
  • "u / u / urn"
  • "u / u / umbrella saves you from the weather"

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 23
  • A real umbrella
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of unicorn, uniform, urn, umbrella
  • Letter cards: U, u and two other letters

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Draw a big "U" in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
  • Say the sound /u/ as in umbrella: a short "uh"
  • Ask learners to say /u/ with you three times

Umbrella Fun (5 minutes)

  • Open a real umbrella and hold it over the circle
  • Ask: "What do we use an umbrella for?" and accept "rain" or "sun"
  • Let each learner hold the umbrella for a moment and say "umbrella"
  • Say together: "u / u / umbrella"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 23 and point to the big red "Uu"
  • Point to big U and say "big U". Point to small u and say "small u"
  • Point to each picture and say its label. Learners repeat twice:
    • unicorn (the white horse with a horn and a rainbow mane)
    • uniform (the school clothes the boy is wearing)
    • umbrella (the orange and white umbrella)
    • urn (the pot with flowers)
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

Chant Time (5 minutes)

  • Point to the chant box at the top of the page
  • Say each line slowly and clap on each "u": "u / u / unicorn", "u / u / uniform", "u / u / urn"
  • Learners echo each line, first softly, then loudly
  • Say the chant two more times together

Act It Out (4 minutes)

  • Learners gallop like the unicorn and say "unicorn"
  • Then they stand up smart like the boy in his uniform and say "uniform"
  • Finish by holding a pretend umbrella over their heads and saying "umbrella"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Hold up the umbrella and ask: "What does umbrella start with?" Learners say /u/
  • Wave goodbye to the unicorn: "Bye-bye, unicorn!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help

Day 2: Rhyme Line and Letter Shape (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 23
  • Letter cards with U and u mixed with other letters
  • Crayons and pencils
  • A sheet with dotted U and u rows (or the worksheet)

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 23 again. Point and say: unicorn, uniform, urn, umbrella
  • Say the chant together: "u / u / unicorn", "u / u / uniform", "u / u / urn"

Rhyme Line (5 minutes)

  • Point to the umbrella and read the rhyme line: "u / u / umbrella saves you from the weather"
  • Ask: "Who is under the umbrella?" Learners point to the boy
  • Learners hold a pretend umbrella and echo the line in a sing-song voice

Big U, Small u (4 minutes)

  • Lay out the letter cards
  • Ask: "Where is big U?" and "Where is small u?" Learners point
  • Show that big U is like a cup, and small u is a small cup with a little stick on the side

Air and Finger Tracing (6 minutes)

  • Big U: start at the top, go down, curve round at the bottom and go back up
  • Small u: start in the middle, go down, curve round, go back up, then go straight down
  • Learners draw both in the air, then run a finger along the big red "Uu" on page 23

Trace and Write (8 minutes)

  • Hand out pencils and check the grip (pinch the pencil, rest it on the middle finger)
  • Work through the dotted rows one line at a time
  • Row 1: trace big U, starting at the top
  • Row 2: trace small u, starting in the middle
  • Praise every try: "Lovely U!"

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Draw "U" in the air one last time and say /u/
  • Say the rhyme line together: "u / u / umbrella saves you from the weather"

Differentiation

  • Support: Use a thick crayon for tracing; hold the learner's hand for the first row
  • Extension: Let confident learners trace a big "U" on the board with a marker

Teaching Tips

  • Only umbrella starts with the short /u/ sound. Unicorn and uniform start with "you", and urn starts with "er". Say each word clearly and let learners copy you; the aim is to recognise the letter U at the start of each word
  • Use the real umbrella as the main example of the /u/ sound
  • Keep the chant rhythm steady with claps so learners remember the order
  • Learners only point and say; they do not read the labels
