Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to big U and small u when asked
2. Say the sound /u/ as in umbrella
3. Name the pictures on page 23: unicorn, uniform, urn, umbrella
4. Say the chant and the rhyme line "u / u / umbrella saves you from the weather"
5. Trace big U and small u with the correct starting point

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show four letter cards (U, u and two other letters). Ask: "Where is big U? Where is small u?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to both U and u without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the umbrella on page 23 and ask: "What sound does umbrella start with?"
• Criteria: Says /u/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. unicorn
  2. uniform
  3. urn
  4. umbrella
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Chant Echo (During Day 1 and Day 2)

• Task: Say "u / u / unicorn", "u / u / uniform", "u / u / urn" and "u / u / umbrella saves you from the weather". The learner repeats each line
• Criteria: Repeats most of the chant and the rhyme line
• Rating: All lines / Some lines / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace the dotted rows of U and u
• Criteria:
  • Starts big U at the top and small u in the middle
  • Curves round at the bottom and goes back up
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to big U and small u on a card of mixed letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound at the start of umbrella (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 23. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • unicorn, uniform, urn, umbrella

Part C: Chant and Rhyme Line (2 marks)

• Learner says "u / u / unicorn, u / u / uniform, u / u / urn" with the teacher (1 mark)
• Learner repeats "u / u / umbrella saves you from the weather" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner traces one dotted big U and one dotted small u (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Hold a real umbrella again and say "u / u / umbrella" with the teacher
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 23 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Trace a big "U" in a sand tray or on the board with a finger
  • Say the chant and the umbrella line with a parent at home
