Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to big T and small t when asked
2. Say the sound /t/
3. Name the pictures on page 22: tomato, tiger, turtle, tree
4. Say the chant and the rhyme line "t / t / tree lifts her leafy arms to pray"
5. Trace big T and small t starting at the top

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show four letter cards (T, t and two other letters). Ask: "Where is big T? Where is small t?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to both T and t without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Tt" on page 22 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /t/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. tomato
  2. tiger
  3. turtle
  4. tree
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Chant Echo (During Day 1 and Day 2)

• Task: Say "t / t / tomato", "t / t / tiger", "t / t / turtle" and "t / t / tree lifts her leafy arms to pray". The learner repeats each line
• Criteria: Repeats most of the chant and the rhyme line
• Rating: All lines / Some lines / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace the dotted rows of T and t
• Criteria:
  • Makes the straight line down first
  • Adds the line across in the right place
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to big T and small t on a card of mixed letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "t" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 22. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • tomato, tiger, turtle, tree

Part C: Chant and Rhyme Line (2 marks)

• Learner says "t / t / tomato, t / t / tiger, t / t / turtle" with the teacher (1 mark)
• Learner repeats "t / t / tree lifts her leafy arms to pray" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner traces one dotted big T and one dotted small t (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Hold a real tomato again and say "t / t / tomato" with the teacher
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 22 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Trace a big "T" in a sand tray or on the board with a finger
  • Say the chant and the tree line with a parent at home
