Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to big R and small r when asked
2. Say the sound /r/
3. Name the pictures on page 20: rabbit, rat, rocket, rose
4. Say the chant and the rhyme line "r / r / rose is the king of flowers"
5. Trace big R and small r with the correct starting point

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show four letter cards (R, r and two other letters). Ask: "Where is big R? Where is small r?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to both R and r without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Rr" on page 20 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /r/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. rabbit
  2. rat
  3. rocket
  4. rose
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Chant Echo (During Day 1 and Day 2)

• Task: Say "r / r / rabbit", "r / r / rat", "r / r / rocket" and "r / r / rose is the king of flowers". The learner repeats each line
• Criteria: Repeats most of the chant and the rhyme line
• Rating: All lines / Some lines / Not yet

5. Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner trace the dotted rows of R and r
• Criteria:
  • Starts big R at the top and small r in the middle
  • Makes the straight line first
  • Holds the pencil with a pinch grip
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to big R and small r on a card of mixed letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "r" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 20. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • rabbit, rat, rocket, rose

Part C: Chant and Rhyme Line (2 marks)

• Learner says "r / r / rabbit, r / r / rat, r / r / rocket" with the teacher (1 mark)
• Learner repeats "r / r / rose is the king of flowers" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner traces one dotted big R and one dotted small r (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Smell a real rose again and say "r / r / rose" with the teacher
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 20 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Trace a big "R" in a sand tray or on the board with a finger
  • Say the chant and the rose line with a parent at home
