Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 13

Letter Mm

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Mm". Learners look at a farm scene on page 15 with a big mango, milk, a colourful mat and a monkey hanging in a tree. They say the four words, chant "m / m / mango", "m / m / milk", "m / m / mat", and learn the rhyme line about the monkey. On the second day they say the chant again, trace "Mm" in the air and in sand, and colour. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

  • Recognition of M used in different words (Lesson Planner, page 2)
  • Say the sound /m/ and the chant from page 15

Key Vocabulary

  • mango
  • milk
  • mat
  • monkey

Chant and Rhyme Line

  • "m / m / mango", "m / m / milk", "m / m / mat"
  • "m / m / monkey hangs in the tree."

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 15
  • A real mango
  • A small mat
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of mango, milk, mat, monkey
  • A big "Mm" letter card

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up the big "Mm" card. Say: "This is big M and this is small m"
  • Say the sound /m/ with closed lips, like "mmm, yummy!"
  • Learners rub their tummies and say /m/ with you three times

Show and Tell (5 minutes)

  • Pass a real mango around the group
  • Let every learner hold it and smell it
  • Ask each learner: "What colour is it?" and accept the real colour of your mango
  • Say together: "mango, /m/ /m/ mango"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 15 and point to the big red "Mm"
  • Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
    • mango
    • milk
    • mat
    • monkey
  • Point to the milk can, the bucket and the bottle and say: "These all have milk in them"
  • Ask: "Which animal gives us milk?" and point to the cow behind the fence
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

Chant Time (6 minutes)

  • Read the chant box slowly, clapping on each "m":
    • m / m / mango
    • m / m / milk
    • m / m / mat
  • Learners echo each line
  • Say the rhyme line: "m / m / monkey hangs in the tree." Learners echo it in a sing-song voice

Action Game (3 minutes)

  • Call out a word and learners act it:
    • mat: sit down on the mat
    • milk: drink from a pretend glass and say "mmm"
    • monkey: hang one arm up high and wave with the other, like the monkey
  • Say the word each time: "mat", "milk", "monkey"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Hold up the mango and ask: "What does mango start with?" Learners say /m/
  • Wave goodbye to the monkey: "Bye-bye, monkey!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name each picture when you point, without help

Day 2: Chant and Trace (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 15
  • A sand tray (or a tray of flour or salt)
  • Board and marker
  • Crayons (orange, yellow, green)
  • A sheet with a big mango outline for each learner

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 15 again. Point and say: mango, milk, mat, monkey
  • Say the chant together, clapping on each "m"
  • Say the rhyme line together: "m / m / monkey hangs in the tree."

Find the M (4 minutes)

  • Point to the big "Mm" on page 15 and ask learners to touch it
  • Point to the chant box and ask learners to find the pink "m" letters
  • Learners only point and count; they do not read the words

Air and Sand Tracing (8 minutes)

  • Draw a big "M" on the board: line down, back up, slant down to the middle, slant up, then line down
  • Draw a small "m": short line down, back up, hump over and down, hump over and down
  • Learners draw "M" and "m" in the air with a finger, saying /m/
  • Learners take turns tracing "m" in the sand tray with one finger
  • Praise every try: "Lovely two humps!"

Little Artists (10 minutes)

  • Give out the mango outline sheet
  • Learners colour the mango orange and yellow and the leaf green, like the picture on page 15
  • As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "mango"

Picture Hunt (2 minutes)

  • Say: "Find the mat!" Learners point on page 15
  • Repeat with mango, milk and monkey

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw "m" in the air one last time and say /m/
  • Rub tummies and say "mmm, mango!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the learner's hand while tracing in the sand; trace with one finger together
  • Extension: Let confident learners draw a big "m" on the board with a marker

Teaching Tips

  • The Lesson Planner (page 2) places Mm in Month 5, Week 1; Mm, Nn and Oo are revised together in Week 3
  • Use only the four page 15 words (mango, milk, mat, monkey)
  • The cow on page 15 is not an "m" word; use it only to talk about milk
  • Small "m" has two humps and small "n" (next lesson) has one hump
