Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 12

Letter Ll

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Ll". Learners look at a scene on page 14 with a woolly lamb, yellow lemons, a wooden log, and a big lion with a lion cub. They say the four words, chant "l / l / lamb", "l / l / lemon", "l / l / log", and learn the rhyme line about the lion. On the second day they say the chant again, trace "Ll" in the air and in sand, and colour. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes

  • Introduction to Ll (Lesson Planner, page 2)
  • Recognition of L used in different words (Lesson Planner, page 2)
  • Say the sound /l/ and the chant from page 14

Key Vocabulary

  • lamb
  • lemon
  • log
  • lion

Chant and Rhyme Line

  • "l / l / lamb", "l / l / lemon", "l / l / log"
  • "l / l / lion roars in the jungle."

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 14
  • A real lemon
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of lamb, lemon, log, lion
  • A big "Ll" letter card

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up the big "Ll" card. Say: "This is big L and this is small l"
  • Say the sound /l/: put the tip of your tongue behind your top teeth and hum "llll"
  • Learners say /l/ with you three times

Show and Tell (5 minutes)

  • Pass a real lemon around the group
  • Let every learner hold it and smell it
  • Ask each learner: "What colour is it?" and accept "yellow"
  • Say together: "lemon, /l/ /l/ lemon"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 14 and point to the big red "Ll"
  • Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
    • lamb
    • lemon
    • log
    • lion
  • Point to the lion cub next to the big lion and ask: "Is this lion big or small?"
  • Ask: "What is the lamb wearing on its face?" (glasses)
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

Chant Time (6 minutes)

  • Read the chant box slowly, clapping on each "l":
    • l / l / lamb
    • l / l / lemon
    • l / l / log
  • Learners echo each line
  • Say the rhyme line: "l / l / lion roars in the jungle." Learners echo it, then give a big roar

Action Game (3 minutes)

  • Call out a word and learners act it:
    • lamb: say "baa" softly
    • lemon: make a sour lemon face
    • lion: roar with big lion paws
  • Say the word each time: "lamb", "lemon", "lion"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Hold up the lemon and ask: "What does lemon start with?" Learners say /l/
  • Wave goodbye to the lamb: "Bye-bye, lamb!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name each picture when you point, without help

Day 2: Chant and Trace (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 14
  • A sand tray (or a tray of flour or salt)
  • Board and marker
  • Crayons (yellow, green)
  • A sheet with a big lemon outline for each learner

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 14 again. Point and say: lamb, lemon, log, lion
  • Say the chant together, clapping on each "l"
  • Say the rhyme line together: "l / l / lion roars in the jungle."

Find the L (4 minutes)

  • Point to the big "Ll" on page 14 and ask learners to touch it
  • Point to the chant box and ask learners to find the pink "l" letters
  • Learners only point and count; they do not read the words

Air and Sand Tracing (8 minutes)

  • Draw a big "L" on the board: a straight line down, then a line across to the right
  • Draw a small "l": one tall line straight down, with a little curl at the bottom like the one on page 14
  • Learners draw "L" and "l" in the air with a finger, saying /l/
  • Learners take turns tracing "l" in the sand tray with one finger
  • Praise every try: "Lovely tall l!"

Little Artists (10 minutes)

  • Give out the lemon outline sheet
  • Learners colour the lemon yellow and the leaves green, like the picture on page 14
  • As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "lemon"

Picture Hunt (2 minutes)

  • Say: "Find the log!" Learners point on page 14
  • Repeat with lamb, lemon and lion

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw "l" in the air one last time and say /l/
  • Give one last big roar and say "Bye-bye, lion!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the learner's hand while tracing in the sand; trace with one finger together
  • Extension: Let confident learners draw a big "l" on the board with a marker

Teaching Tips

  • The Lesson Planner (page 2) places Ll with Kk in Month 4, Week 2; Jj, Kk and Ll are revised together in Week 3
  • Use only the four page 14 words (lamb, lemon, log, lion)
  • On page 14 the big "L" and small "l" look alike. Point out that big L has a line across the bottom, and small l is just one tall line with a little curl
  • Keep the /l/ sound long and smooth: "llll"
