Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 11

Letter Kk

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Kk". Learners look at a palace garden on page 13 with a king, two kittens, a koala and a kangaroo. They say the four words, chant "k / k / king", "k / k / kitten", "k / k / koala", and learn the rhyme line about the kangaroo. On the second day they say the chant again, trace "Kk" in the air and in sand, and colour. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes

  • Introduction to Kk (Lesson Planner, page 2)
  • Recognition of K used in different words (Lesson Planner, page 2)
  • Say the sound /k/ and the chant from page 13

Key Vocabulary

  • king
  • kitten
  • koala
  • kangaroo

Chant and Rhyme Line

  • "k / k / king", "k / k / kitten", "k / k / koala"
  • "k / k / kangaroo jumps high in the air."

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 13
  • A paper crown
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of king, kitten, koala, kangaroo
  • A big "Kk" letter card

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up the big "Kk" card. Say: "This is big K and this is small k"
  • Say the sound /k/ short and sharp, from the back of the mouth, as in king
  • Learners say /k/ with you three times

Show and Tell (5 minutes)

  • Put on a paper crown and say: "I am the king!"
  • Pass the crown around. Each learner wears it and says "king"
  • Say together: "king, /k/ /k/ king"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 13 and point to the big red "Kk"
  • Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
    • king
    • kitten
    • koala
    • kangaroo
  • Ask: "How many kittens can you see?" (two) and "What is the king wearing on his head?" (a crown)
  • Point to the baby in the kangaroo's pouch
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

Chant Time (6 minutes)

  • Read the chant box slowly, clapping on each "k":
    • k / k / king
    • k / k / kitten
    • k / k / koala
  • Learners echo each line
  • Say the rhyme line: "k / k / kangaroo jumps high in the air." Learners echo it, then jump high

Action Game (3 minutes)

  • Call out a word and learners act it:
    • king: stand tall and fold your arms like the king
    • kitten: say "meow" and wash your face with a paw
    • kangaroo: jump high in the air
  • Say the word each time: "king", "kitten", "kangaroo"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Hold up the crown and ask: "What does king start with?" Learners say /k/
  • Wave goodbye to the kittens: "Bye-bye, kittens!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name each picture when you point, without help

Day 2: Chant and Trace (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 13
  • A sand tray (or a tray of flour or salt)
  • Board and marker
  • Crayons (orange, brown, grey, red)
  • A sheet with a big kangaroo outline for each learner

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 13 again. Point and say: king, kitten, koala, kangaroo
  • Say the chant together, clapping on each "k"
  • Say the rhyme line together: "k / k / kangaroo jumps high in the air."

Find the K (4 minutes)

  • Point to the big "Kk" on page 13 and ask learners to touch it
  • Point to the chant box and ask learners to find the pink "k" letters
  • Learners only point and count; they do not read the words

Air and Sand Tracing (8 minutes)

  • Draw a big "K" on the board: a long line down, then a slanting line in to the middle and a slanting line out to the bottom
  • Draw a small "k": a tall line down, then a small slant in and a small slant out
  • Learners draw "K" and "k" in the air with a finger, saying /k/
  • Learners take turns tracing "k" in the sand tray with one finger
  • Praise every try: "Lovely kicking k!"

Little Artists (10 minutes)

  • Give out the kangaroo outline sheet
  • Learners colour the kangaroo orange-brown, like the picture on page 13
  • Learners can draw a little baby in the kangaroo's pouch
  • As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "kangaroo"

Picture Hunt (2 minutes)

  • Say: "Find the koala!" Learners point on page 13
  • Repeat with king, kitten and kangaroo

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw "k" in the air one last time and say /k/
  • Jump high like the kangaroo and say "Bye-bye, kangaroo!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the learner's hand while tracing in the sand; trace with one finger together
  • Extension: Let confident learners draw a big "k" on the board with a marker

Teaching Tips

  • The Lesson Planner (page 2) places Kk with Ll in Month 4, Week 2; Jj, Kk and Ll are revised together in Week 3
  • Use only the four page 13 words (king, kitten, koala, kangaroo)
  • Say /k/ as a short sound; do not add "uh" at the end
  • Learners met cat, cow and crow with letter c. If a learner says they start like king, praise their listening and say: "Yes, they sound the same, but they use the letter c"
