Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 10
Letter Jj
Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Jj". Learners look at a kitchen scene on page 12 with a jacket, a glass of juice, a red jelly and a smiling joker. They say the four words, chant "j / j / jelly", "j / j / juice", "j / j / jacket", and learn the rhyme line about the joker. On the second day they say the chant again, trace "Jj" in the air and in sand, and colour. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 12
- A real jacket
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of jelly, juice, jacket, joker
- A big "Jj" letter card
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Hold up the big "Jj" card. Say: "This is big J and this is small j"
- Say the sound /j/ with a little jump, as in jelly
- Learners jump on the spot and say /j/ with you three times
Show and Tell (5 minutes)
- Show a real jacket and put it on
- Let a few learners try the jacket on and say "jacket"
- Say together: "jacket, /j/ /j/ jacket"
Look and Say (10 minutes)
- Open page 12 and point to the big red "Jj"
- Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
- jacket
- juice
- jelly
- joker
- Ask: "What colour is the jelly?" (red) and "What colour is the juice?" (orange)
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Chant Time (6 minutes)
- Read the chant box slowly, clapping on each "j":
- j / j / jelly
- j / j / juice
- j / j / jacket
- Learners echo each line
- Say the rhyme line: "j / j / joker gives you smiles." Learners echo it with a big smile
Action Game (3 minutes)
- Call out a word and learners act it:
- jelly: wobble like a jelly
- juice: sip from a pretend glass
- joker: make a big funny smile
- Say the word each time: "jelly", "juice", "joker"
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Hold up the jacket and ask: "What does jacket start with?" Learners say /j/
- Wave goodbye to the joker: "Bye-bye, joker!"
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name each picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Chant and Trace (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 12
- A sand tray (or a tray of flour or salt)
- Board and marker
- Crayons (red, green, orange)
- A sheet with a big jelly outline for each learner
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 12 again. Point and say: jelly, juice, jacket, joker
- Say the chant together, clapping on each "j"
- Say the rhyme line together: "j / j / joker gives you smiles."
Find the J (4 minutes)
- Point to the big "Jj" on page 12 and ask learners to touch it
- Point to the chant box and ask learners to find the pink "j" letters
- Learners only point and count; they do not read the words
Air and Sand Tracing (8 minutes)
- Draw a big "J" on the board: start at the top, go straight down, then curl round to the left like a hook
- Draw a small "j": go down below the line, curl round to the left, then put a dot on top
- Learners draw "J" and "j" in the air with a finger, saying /j/
- Learners take turns tracing "j" in the sand tray, and poke a dot on top
- Praise every try: "Lovely curly j!"
Little Artists (10 minutes)
- Give out the jelly outline sheet
- Learners colour the jelly red and the leaves on top green, like the picture on page 12
- Learners can also draw an orange glass of juice next to it
- As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "jelly"
Picture Hunt (2 minutes)
- Say: "Find the joker!" Learners point on page 12
- Repeat with jelly, juice and jacket
Wrap-Up (1 minute)
- Draw "j" in the air one last time, add the dot, and say /j/
- Say goodbye to the jelly: "Bye-bye, jelly!"
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand while tracing in the sand; trace with one finger together
- Extension: Let confident learners draw a big "j" on the board with a marker
Teaching Tips
- The Lesson Planner (page 2) places Jj in Month 4, Week 1; Jj, Kk and Ll are revised together in Week 3
- Use only the four page 12 words (jelly, juice, jacket, joker)
- Small "j" goes below the line and has a dot on top, like small "i"
- The joker on page 12 is a clown; it is fine to tell learners "a joker is a funny clown"
