Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 9

Letter Ii

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Ii". Learners look at a snowy scene on page 11 with an igloo, ice cubes, a big ice cream and a little ladybird insect. They say the four words, chant "i / i / igloo", "i / i / ice", "i / i / ice cream", and learn the rhyme line about the insect. On the second day they say the chant again, trace "Ii" in the air and in sand, and colour. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Learning Outcomes

  • Introduction to Ii (Lesson Planner, page 2)
  • Recognition of I used in different words (Lesson Planner, page 2)
  • Say the sound /i/ and the chant from page 11

Key Vocabulary

  • igloo
  • ice
  • ice cream
  • insect

Chant and Rhyme Line

  • "i / i / igloo", "i / i / ice", "i / i / ice cream"
  • "i / i / insect has no bones."

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 11
  • A few ice cubes in a bowl
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of igloo, ice, ice cream, insect
  • A big "Ii" letter card

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Hold up the big "Ii" card. Say: "This is big I and this is small i"
  • Say the short sound /i/ as in igloo and insect, with a little smile
  • Learners say /i/ with you three times

Show and Tell (5 minutes)

  • Pass the bowl of ice cubes around the group
  • Let every learner touch the ice and say "cold!"
  • Say: "This is ice." Learners repeat "ice"
  • Tell learners that ice says the name of the letter: "i, ice"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 11 and point to the big red "Ii"
  • Point to each picture and say the word; learners repeat twice:
    • igloo
    • ice
    • ice cream
    • insect
  • Explain that an igloo is a house made of ice and snow
  • Point to the ladybird and say: "This is an insect"
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

Chant Time (6 minutes)

  • Read the chant box slowly, clapping on each "i":
    • i / i / igloo
    • i / i / ice
    • i / i / ice cream
  • Learners echo each line
  • Say the rhyme line: "i / i / insect has no bones." Learners echo it in a sing-song voice

Action Game (3 minutes)

  • Call out a word and learners act it:
    • igloo: make a round roof with your arms over your head
    • ice cream: lick a pretend ice cream
    • insect: crawl your fingers up your arm
  • Say the word each time: "igloo", "ice cream", "insect"

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Point to the igloo and ask: "What does igloo start with?" Learners say /i/
  • Wave goodbye to the insect: "Bye-bye, insect!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name each picture when you point, without help

Day 2: Chant and Trace (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 11
  • A sand tray (or a tray of flour or salt)
  • Board and marker
  • Crayons (pink, purple, brown, red, black)
  • A sheet with a big ice cream outline for each learner

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 11 again. Point and say: igloo, ice, ice cream, insect
  • Say the chant together, clapping on each "i"
  • Say the rhyme line together: "i / i / insect has no bones."

Find the I (4 minutes)

  • Point to the big "Ii" on page 11 and ask learners to touch it
  • Point to the chant box and ask learners to find the pink "i" letters
  • Learners only point and count; they do not read the words

Air and Sand Tracing (8 minutes)

  • Draw a big "I" on the board: a straight line down, then a short line across the top and a short line across the bottom
  • Draw a small "i": a short line down, then a dot on top
  • Learners draw "I" and "i" in the air with a finger, saying /i/
  • Learners take turns tracing "i" in the sand tray, and poke a dot on top
  • Praise every try: "Lovely i with a dot!"

Little Artists (10 minutes)

  • Give out the ice cream outline sheet
  • Learners colour the ice cream pink and purple and the cone brown, like the picture on page 11
  • Learners can also draw a little red ladybird insect with black spots
  • As they work, ask: "What is this?" Learners say "ice cream"

Picture Hunt (2 minutes)

  • Say: "Find the igloo!" Learners point on page 11
  • Repeat with ice, ice cream and insect

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw "i" in the air one last time, add the dot, and say /i/
  • Say goodbye to the igloo: "Bye-bye, igloo!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the learner's hand while tracing in the sand; trace with one finger together
  • Extension: Let confident learners draw a big "i" on the board with a marker

Teaching Tips

  • The Lesson Planner (page 2) places Ii with Hh in Month 3, Week 2; Gg, Hh and Ii are revised together in Week 3
  • Igloo and insect start with the short sound /i/. Ice and ice cream start with the letter's name "i". Teach /i/ with igloo and insect, and simply tell learners that ice and ice cream also start with "i"
  • Use only the four page 11 words (igloo, ice, ice cream, insect)
  • Always add the dot on top of small "i"
