Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 6

Letter Ff

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Ff". Learners look at a big seaside picture on page 8 and meet four words that begin with "f": flag, flower, frog and fish. They say the sound chant from the page and the rhyme line "f / f / fish loves diving and rolling". On the second day they find the big "F" and the small "f", say the words again and draw the letter in the air. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Point to the big red "Ff" at the top of page 8 and say "F, f"
  • Draw a big "f" in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
  • Say the sound /f/ with the top teeth on the bottom lip, blowing gently: /f/ /f/ /f/

Flower Pass (5 minutes)

  • Pass a real flower around the group
  • Let every learner hold it, smell it and say "flower"
  • Ask: "What colour is it?" and let the learner answer
  • Say together: "f / f / flower"

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 8 and point to each picture with its label:
    • the red, blue and yellow flag: "flag"
    • the yellow flowers: "flower"
    • the smiling green frog: "frog"
    • the yellow fish with a purple bow jumping out of the water: "fish"
  • Learners repeat each word twice
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

Sound Chant (8 minutes)

  • Read the chant box aloud, waving a hand like a flag on each "f":
    • f / f / flag
    • f / f / flower
    • f / f / frog
  • Learners echo each line
  • Say it again in a big voice, then a tiny voice

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Hold up the flower and ask: "What does flower start with?" Learners say /f/
  • Wave goodbye to the frog: "Bye-bye, frog!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name each picture when you point, without help

Day 2: Find the Letter (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 8
  • Letter cards for "F", "f", "E" and "e"

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Rhyme Time (6 minutes)

  • Read the rhyme line aloud: "f / f / fish loves diving and rolling"

  • Learners put their hands together like a fish, dive them down and roll them round while saying the line again
  • Point to the fish jumping out of the water on page 8

Big F and Small f (6 minutes)

  • Point to the big red "Ff" on page 8
  • Say: "This is big F. This is small f." Learners point to each one
  • Hold up the "F", "f", "E" and "e" cards one at a time; learners say the letter name
  • Teacher note: big "F" looks like big "E" without the bottom line

Air and Finger Tracing (7 minutes)

  • Big F: a straight line down, then two lines across, at the top and in the middle
  • Small f: start with a little hook at the top, go straight down, then a short line across
  • Draw both letters in the air together, slowly
  • Learners run a finger over the big "Ff" on page 8

Find It Game (5 minutes)

  • Say a word from the page; one learner points to the picture and says "f / f / ..."
  • Use: flag, flower, frog, fish
  • Clap for every correct answer

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw "f" in the air one last time and say /f/
  • Say the rhyme line together: "f / f / fish loves diving and rolling"

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the learner's finger and trace the big "Ff" on the page together
  • Extension: Let confident learners find the letter "f" on the word labels on page 8
