Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 5

Letter Ee

Subject: English | Class: Playgroup | Series: Leeds

Overview

This lesson introduces the letter "Ee". Learners look at a big picture on page 7 and meet four words that begin with "e": eagle, engine, elbow and elephant. They say the sound chant from the page and the rhyme line "e / e / elephant has white tusks". On the second day they find the big "E" and the small "e", say the words again and draw the letter in the air. All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.

Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 7
  • Picture cards (or the book pictures) of eagle, engine, elbow, elephant

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
  • Point to the big red "Ee" at the top of page 7 and say "E, e"
  • Draw a big "e" in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
  • Say the sound /e/ as in elbow and elephant, three times; learners say it with you

Elbow Touch (5 minutes)

  • Point to the boy on page 7 with his hand on his side
  • Show your own elbow and say "elbow"
  • Learners touch their own elbows and say "e / e / elbow"
  • Play "Elbow to elbow": learners gently touch elbows with a partner

Look and Say (10 minutes)

  • Open page 7 and point to each picture with its label:
    • the brown eagle flying in the sky: "eagle"
    • the colourful train engine with a smiling face: "engine"
    • the boy's bent arm: "elbow"
    • the little elephant with its trunk up: "elephant"
  • Learners repeat each word twice
  • Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book

Sound Chant (8 minutes)

  • Read the chant box aloud, tapping your elbow on each "e":
    • e / e / eagle
    • e / e / engine
    • e / e / elbow
  • Learners echo each line
  • Say it again in a big voice, then a tiny voice
  • Teacher note: eagle begins with the letter "e" but says its name "ee"; engine, elbow and elephant say /e/

Wrap-Up (2 minutes)

  • Touch your elbow and ask: "What does elbow start with?" Learners say /e/
  • Wave goodbye to the elephant: "Bye-bye, elephant!"

Differentiation

  • Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
  • Extension: Ask confident learners to name each picture when you point, without help

Day 2: Find the Letter (30 minutes)

Materials

  • Textbook page 7
  • Letter cards for "E", "e", "c" and "d"

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

  • Show page 7 again. Point and say: eagle, engine, elbow, elephant
  • Say the chant together: "e / e / eagle, e / e / engine, e / e / elbow"

Rhyme Time (6 minutes)

  • Read the rhyme line aloud: "e / e / elephant has white tusks"
  • Learners echo it
  • Learners swing one arm like an elephant's trunk and say the line again
  • Teacher note: the elephant on page 7 is a baby elephant and no tusks can be seen; explain that tusks are the two long white teeth that grown-up elephants have

Big E and Small e (6 minutes)

  • Point to the big red "Ee" on page 7
  • Say: "This is big E. This is small e." Learners point to each one
  • Hold up the "E", "e", "c" and "d" cards one at a time; learners say the letter name

Air and Finger Tracing (7 minutes)

  • Big E: a straight line down, then three lines across: top, middle and bottom
  • Small e: a little line across the middle, then curve up and round, and stop at the bottom
  • Draw both letters in the air together, slowly
  • Learners run a finger over the big "Ee" on page 7

Find It Game (5 minutes)

  • Say a word from the page; one learner points to the picture and says "e / e / ..."
  • Use: eagle, engine, elbow, elephant
  • Clap for every correct answer

Wrap-Up (1 minute)

  • Draw "e" in the air one last time and say /e/
  • Say the rhyme line together: "e / e / elephant has white tusks"

Differentiation

  • Support: Hold the learner's finger and trace the big "Ee" on the page together
  • Extension: Let confident learners find the letter "e" on the word labels on page 7
