Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the big "D" and the small "d" when asked
2. Say the sound /d/
3. Name the pictures on page 6: dragonfly, drum, dog, duck
4. Say the chant "d / d / dragonfly, d / d / drum, d / d / dog"
5. Repeat the rhyme line "d / d / duck makes a quack"

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 2)

• Task: Show three letter cards (D, d, b). Ask: "Where is big D? Where is small d?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to "D" and "d" without help, and does not pick "b"
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Dd" on page 6 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /d/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. dragonfly
  2. drum
  3. dog
  4. duck
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Chant Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: Say "d / d / dragonfly, d / d / drum, d / d / dog". The learner repeats it
• Criteria: Says most of the chant
• Rating: Whole chant / Part of chant / Not yet

5. Air Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner draw "d" in the air and with a finger on page 6
• Criteria:
  • Makes the round part first
  • Then goes up tall and straight down
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to big "D" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Point to small "d" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
3. Say the sound of "d" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 6. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • dragonfly, drum, dog, duck

Part C: Rhyme Line (1 mark)

• Learner repeats "d / d / duck makes a quack" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner finger-traces the big "D" and the small "d" on page 6 (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Tap a toy drum and say "d / d / drum" with the teacher
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 6 pictures for two minutes each day
  • Trace a big "d" in a sand tray or on the board with a finger
  • Say the chant "d / d / dragonfly, d / d / drum, d / d / dog" with a parent at home
