Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the big "C" and the small "c" when asked
2. Say the sound /k/ for "c"
3. Name the pictures on page 5: crow, cow, carrot, cat
4. Say the chant "c / c / crow, c / c / cow, c / c / carrot"
5. Repeat the rhyme line "c / c / cat always chases a rat"

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 2)

• Task: Show three letter cards (C, c, b). Ask: "Where is big C? Where is small c?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to "C" and "c" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Cc" on page 5 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /k/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. crow
  2. cow
  3. carrot
  4. cat
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Chant Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: Say "c / c / crow, c / c / cow, c / c / carrot". The learner repeats it
• Criteria: Says most of the chant
• Rating: Whole chant / Part of chant / Not yet

5. Air Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner draw "c" in the air and with a finger on page 5
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the top
  • Curves round to the left and stops at the bottom
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to big "C" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Point to small "c" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
3. Say the sound of "c" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 5. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • crow, cow, carrot, cat

Part C: Rhyme Line (1 mark)

• Learner repeats "c / c / cat always chases a rat" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner finger-traces the big "C" and the small "c" on page 5, starting at the top (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan
