Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the big "A" and the small "a" when asked
2. Say the sound /a/
3. Name the pictures on page 3: ant, apple, axe, aeroplane
4. Say the chant "a / a / ant, a / a / apple, a / a / axe"
5. Repeat the rhyme line "a / a / aeroplane is above the tree"

All assessment for Playgroup is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 2)

• Task: Show three letter cards (A, a, b). Ask: "Where is big A? Where is small a?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to "A" and "a" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the big "Aa" on page 3 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /a/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. ant
  2. apple
  3. axe
  4. aeroplane
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Chant Echo (During Day 1)

• Task: Say "a / a / ant, a / a / apple, a / a / axe". The learner repeats it
• Criteria: Says most of the chant
• Rating: Whole chant / Part of chant / Not yet

5. Air Tracing Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner draw "a" in the air and with a finger on page 3
• Criteria:
  • Starts at the top of the letter
  • Curves round and then goes down
• Rating: Neat / Trying well / Needs help

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (3 marks)

1. Point to big "A" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Point to small "a" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
3. Say the sound of "a" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 3. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • ant, apple, axe, aeroplane

Part C: Rhyme Line (1 mark)

• Learner repeats "a / a / aeroplane is above the tree" (1 mark)

Part D: Tracing (2 marks)

• Learner finger-traces the big "A" and the small "a" on page 3, starting at the top (1 mark each)

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Hold and name a real apple again with the teacher
  • Play "Point to it" with the page 3 pictures for two minutes each day

  • Say the chant "a / a / ant, a / a / apple, a / a / axe" with a parent at home
