Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Say that action words tell us what we are doing
2. Find the action word in the page 40 sentences: singing, running, swimming, ambles, shining, sleeping, howls, eating
3. Act out an action word
4. Write the actions for the Activity Time pictures: reading, listening, cooking, jumping

Assessment for Nursery is mostly oral and observational. Writing is done with the teacher's help.

Formative Assessment

1. Meaning Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Ask: "What do action words tell us?"
• Criteria: Says "what we are doing"
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Find the Action (During Day 1)

• Task: Read a sentence from page 40 and ask: "What is the action word?"
  1. The bird is singing. (singing)
  2. Two boys are running. (running)
  3. The sun is shining. (shining)
  4. The cat is sleeping. (sleeping)
  5. The jackal howls. (howls)
• Criteria: Finds at least 4 out of 5 action words
• Rating: 5 correct / 3-4 correct / 0-2 correct

3. Act It Out (During Day 2)

• Task: Say an action word; the learner acts it out
  1. running
  2. swimming
  3. sleeping
  4. eating
• Criteria: Shows the action clearly
• Rating: 4 actions / 2-3 actions / 0-1 actions

4. Activity Time (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner write the actions for the four pictures on page 40
• Criteria: Says and writes reading, listening, cooking, jumping (with help)
• Rating: 4 correct / 2-3 correct / 0-1 correct

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Meaning (1 mark)

1. Action words tell us... (what we are doing) (1 mark)

Part B: Find the Action Word (4 marks)

• Learner says the action word in each sentence (1 mark each):
  • The bird is singing.
  • The elephant ambles.
  • The sun is shining.
  • The cat is sleeping.

Part C: Act and Say (1 mark)

• Learner acts out "running" and says the word (1 mark)

Part D: Name the Action (4 marks)

• Show the four Activity Time pictures. Learner names each action (1 mark each):
  • reading, listening, cooking, jumping

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Play "Simon says" with page 40 action words (running, swimming, sleeping, eating)
  • Read one page 40 sentence a day and point to the action word
  • Say what they are doing at home with a parent: "I am eating", "I am reading"
  • Redo the Activity Time with the teacher acting out each picture
