Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Say the rule: we use "a" before consonant sounds and "an" before vowel sounds
2. Hear whether a word starts with a vowel sound or a consonant sound
3. Say the correct "a" or "an" for the page 39 words: an egg, a bat, an aeroplane, a doll, a cake, an ice cream, an orange, a candy
4. Fill in "a" or "an" for apple, ball, eagle and jug

Assessment for Nursery is mostly oral and observational. Writing is done with the teacher's help.

Formative Assessment

1. Rule Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Ask: "When do we use 'an'?"
• Criteria: Says "before vowel sounds"
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Vowel or Consonant Sound? (During Day 1)

• Task: Say a word and ask: "Does it start with a vowel sound?"
  1. egg (yes)
  2. bat (no)
  3. orange (yes)
  4. doll (no)
  5. ice cream (yes)
• Criteria: Answers correctly for at least 4 out of 5
• Rating: 5 correct / 3-4 correct / 0-2 correct

3. Say It Right (During Day 2)

• Task: Point to a picture on page 39; the learner says it with "a" or "an"
  1. aeroplane (an)
  2. cake (a)
  3. candy (a)
  4. egg (an)
• Criteria: Uses the correct word every time
• Rating: 4 correct / 2-3 correct / 0-1 correct

4. Activity Time (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner fill in the four blanks on page 39
• Criteria: Writes an apple, a ball, an eagle, a jug
• Rating: 4 correct / 2-3 correct / 0-1 correct

Summative Assessment

Oral and Written Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: The Rule (2 marks)

1. We use "a" before... (consonant sounds) (1 mark)
2. We use "an" before... (vowel sounds) (1 mark)

Part B: Say It (4 marks)

• Learner says each word with "a" or "an" (1 mark each):
  • egg, bat, orange, doll

Part C: Write It (4 marks)

• Learner writes "a" or "an" (1 mark each):

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Revise the vowels a, e, i, o, u and say their sounds
  • Say the first sound of each page 39 word before choosing "a" or "an"

  • Redo the Activity Time with the teacher saying each word slowly
