Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 27
Letter Zz
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Zz", the last letter of the alphabet. Learners look at page 32 and meet four words that begin with "z": zeppelin, zoo, zip and zebra. They say the sound /z/ from the page, talk about the largest zoo of Pakistan and encircle the picture that begins with "Z". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise the big "Z" and the small "z"
- Say the sound /z/ as in zebra
- Name the pictures that begin with "z"
- Pick out the picture that begins with "Z"
Key Vocabulary
- zeppelin
- zoo
- zip
- zebra
Sound Box (from page 32)
- "/z/ /z/"

Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)

- Point to the big red "Zz" at the top of page 32 and say "Z, z"
- Draw a big "z" in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
- Say the sound /z/ slowly, like a buzzing bee, three times; learners say it with you
Zip It Up (5 minutes)
- Show a jacket or bag with a zip
- Pull the zip up and down slowly and say "zip"; learners repeat
- Let a few learners pull the zip and say "/z/ /z/ zip"
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Open page 32 and point to each picture with its label:
- the blue airship floating in the sky: "zeppelin"
- the wooden gate with animals inside: "zoo"
- the long red zip: "zip"
- the black and white striped animal: "zebra"
- Learners repeat each word twice
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Zoo Visit (6 minutes)
- Point to the zoo gate and ask: "Which animals can you see at the zoo?"
- Help learners name the animals in the picture: giraffe, parrot, tiger, fox, zebra
- Ask: "Which one starts with /z/?" Learners say "zebra"
Wrap-Up (2 minutes)
- Point to the zebra and ask: "What does zebra start with?" Learners say /z/
- Say all four words together: zeppelin, zoo, zip, zebra
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Think and Encircle (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 32
- Pencils or crayons
Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Letter in the Air and on the Page (6 minutes)
- Point to the big pink "Z" at the bottom of page 32
- Show the stroke for "z": a line across the top, a slant down to the bottom left, then a line across the bottom
- Learners draw "z" in the air, then run a finger over the pink "Z" in the book
Book Activity: Encircle the Z Picture (8 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Encircle the picture beginning with the letter 'Z'."
- Point to the racing car and ask: "What is this?" Learners say "car" or "racing car"
- Point to the zebra and ask: "What is this?" Learners say "zebra"
- Ask: "Which one starts with /z/?" Learners draw a circle round the zebra
- Walk round and check every learner circled the zebra
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Play "Buzz for z": say a word; learners buzz "zzz" if it starts with /z/ (zebra, car, zip, zoo, zeppelin)
- Celebrate: "Z is the last letter. We have met all the letters from A to Z!"
- Wave goodbye: "Bye-bye, zebra!"
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to draw the circle; say "zebra" together first
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four "z" pictures from memory
Teaching Tips
- Say /z/ like a buzzing bee: "zzz"
- A zeppelin is a big airship that floats in the sky
- For the Do You Know question, accept any big zoo learners know; the Lahore Zoo and the Karachi Zoo are well-known examples
