Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the big "Z" and the small "z" when asked
2. Say the sound /z/
3. Name the pictures on page 32: zeppelin, zoo, zip, zebra
4. Answer the Do You Know question: name a big zoo in Pakistan
5. Encircle the picture that begins with "Z" (zebra, not racing car)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (Z, y, z). Ask: "Where is Z? Where is small z?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to big "Z" and small "z" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the "/z/ /z/" box on page 32 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /z/ clearly, like a buzz
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. zeppelin
  2. zoo
  3. zip
  4. zebra
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "Can you name a big zoo in Pakistan?"
• Criteria: Names a zoo, such as the Lahore Zoo or the Karachi Zoo
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

5. Encircle Activity Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the encircle activity at the bottom of page 32
• Criteria:
  • Names the racing car and the zebra
  • Draws a circle round the zebra
• Rating: Correct / With help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "z" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "z" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 32. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • zeppelin, zoo, zip, zebra

Part C: Do You Know? (1 mark)

• Learner names a big zoo in Pakistan (1 mark)

Part D: Odd One Out (3 marks)

• Show pairs of pictures from the book. Learner points to the one that begins with "z" (1 mark each):
  • zebra or racing car
  • zip or racing car
  • zeppelin or racing car

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Pull a zip up and down with the teacher and say "/z/ /z/ zip"

  • Draw a big "z" in the air or in a sand tray with a finger
  • Say the four "z" words with a parent at home
