Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 26
Letter Yy
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Yy". Learners look at page 31 and meet four words that begin with "y": yolk, yak, yam and yacht. They say the sound /y/ from the page, talk about the Do You Know question about the yolk and tick the picture that begins with "Y". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise the big "Y" and the small "y"
- Say the sound /y/ as in yolk
- Name the pictures that begin with "y"
- Pick out the picture that begins with "Y"
Key Vocabulary
- yolk
- yak
- yam
- yacht
Sound Box (from page 31)
- "/y/ /y/"
Do You Know? (from page 31)
- "What does a yolk contain?" (Answer: good food for the body, such as protein and vitamins)
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 31
- A boiled egg cut in half (to show the yolk)
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of yolk, yak, yam, yacht
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Point to the big red "Yy" at the top of page 31 and say "Y, y"
- Draw a big "y" in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
- Say the sound /y/ slowly, three times, as in yolk; learners say it with you
Egg and Yolk (5 minutes)
- Show the boiled egg cut in half
- Point to the yellow middle and say "yolk"; learners repeat
- Ask: "What colour is the yolk?" Learners say "yellow"
- Say together: "/y/ /y/ yolk"
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Open page 31 and point to each picture with its label:
- the broken egg with the yellow yolk: "yolk"
- the big animal in the middle of the page: "yak"
- the sliced vegetable: "yam"
- the white boat on the sea: "yacht"
- Learners repeat each word twice
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Yes, Yes, Yacht (6 minutes)
- Learners sit in a line and rock side to side like a boat on the sea
- Say "yacht" each time they rock
- Ask: "Is a yacht a boat?" Learners nod and say "Yes!"
Wrap-Up (2 minutes)
- Point to the yolk and ask: "What does yolk start with?" Learners say /y/
- Say all four words together: yolk, yak, yam, yacht
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Think and Tick (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 31
- Pencils
- The boiled egg from Day 1 (or a fresh one)
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 31 again. Point and say: yolk, yak, yam, yacht
- Say the sound together: "/y/ /y/"
- Find the big "Y" and the small "y" on the page
Do You Know? (7 minutes)
- Read the question aloud: "What does a yolk contain?"
- Point to the yolk in the book and on the real egg
- Explain simply: the yolk has good food inside it that helps us grow strong, like protein and vitamins
- Ask: "Is egg yolk good for us?" Learners say "Yes!"
Letter in the Air and on the Page (6 minutes)
- Point to the big pink "Y" at the bottom of page 31
- Show the stroke for "y": slant down to the middle, then from the other side slant all the way down past the line
- Learners draw "y" in the air, then run a finger over the pink "Y" in the book
Book Activity: Tick the Y Picture (8 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Tick the picture beginning with the letter 'Y'."
- Point to the first picture and say "yak"; learners repeat
- Point to the volcano and ask: "What is this?" Learners say "volcano"
- Ask: "Which one starts with /y/?" Learners tick the box under the yak
- Walk round and check every learner ticked the yak
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Play "Yes for y": say a word; learners say "Yes!" if it starts with /y/ (yolk, volcano, yam, yacht, yak)
- Wave goodbye: "Bye-bye, yacht!"
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to make the tick; say "yak" together first
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four "y" pictures from memory
Teaching Tips
- Say /y/ as at the start of "yes": a quick sound, smiling a little
- Call the big animal "yak", as the label says. Keep the talk on the word and its /y/ sound
- The book's instruction reads "Tick the pictures beginnings with the letter 'Y'." Read it aloud as "Tick the picture beginning with the letter 'Y'."
