Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the big "Y" and the small "y" when asked
2. Say the sound /y/
3. Name the pictures on page 31: yolk, yak, yam, yacht
4. Answer the Do You Know question: a yolk contains good food for the body
5. Tick the picture that begins with "Y" (yak, not volcano)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (Y, x, y). Ask: "Where is Y? Where is small y?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to big "Y" and small "y" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the "/y/ /y/" box on page 31 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /y/ clearly
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. yolk
  2. yak
  3. yam
  4. yacht
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "What does a yolk contain? Is it good for us?"
• Criteria: Says it has good food / helps us grow strong
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

5. Tick Activity Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the tick activity at the bottom of page 31
• Criteria:
  • Names the yak and the volcano
  • Ticks the box under the yak
• Rating: Correct / With help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "y" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "y" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 31. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • yolk, yak, yam, yacht

Part C: Do You Know? (1 mark)

• Learner says a yolk has good food that helps us grow (1 mark)

Part D: Odd One Out (3 marks)

• Show pairs of pictures from the book. Learner points to the one that begins with "y" (1 mark each):
  • yak or volcano
  • yacht or volcano
  • yolk or volcano

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

  • Say the four "y" words with a parent at home
