Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the big "X" and the small "x" when asked
2. Say the letter name "x" and make an "X" with their arms
3. Name the pictures on page 30: xylophone, X-ray, Xmas tree, xebec
4. Answer the Do You Know question: Christians decorate the Christmas tree at Christmas
5. Colour the picture that begins with "X" (xylophone, not banana)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (X, w, x). Ask: "Where is X? Where is small x?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to big "X" and small "x" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Letter Shape (During Day 1)

• Task: Ask the learner to make an "X" with their arms
• Criteria: Crosses arms to make an "X" shape
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. xylophone
  2. X-ray
  3. Xmas tree
  4. xebec
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "When do Christians decorate the Christmas tree?"
• Criteria: Says "at Christmas" or "in December"
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

5. Colouring Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the colouring activity at the bottom of page 30
• Criteria:
  • Names the banana and the xylophone
  • Colours the xylophone, not the banana
• Rating: Correct / With help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter (2 marks)

1. Point to "x" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Make an "X" shape with arms or fingers (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 30. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • xylophone, X-ray, Xmas tree, xebec

Part C: Do You Know? (1 mark)

• Learner says the Christmas tree is decorated at Christmas (1 mark)

Part D: Odd One Out (3 marks)

• Show pairs of pictures from the book. Learner points to the one that begins with "x" (1 mark each):
  • xylophone or banana
  • X-ray or banana
  • xebec or banana

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan
