Daily Lesson Plan -- Lesson 23
Letter Vv
Subject: English | Class: Nursery | Series: Leeds
Overview
This lesson introduces the letter "Vv". Learners look at page 28 and meet four words that begin with "v": vulture, vegetables, vase and volcano. They say the sound /v/ from the page, talk about their favourite vegetable and encircle the picture that begins with "V". All talk is oral and playful. Learners are not expected to read or write words.
Learning Outcomes
- Recognise the big "V" and the small "v"
- Say the sound /v/ as in vase
- Name the pictures that begin with "v"
- Pick out the picture that begins with "V"
Key Vocabulary
- vulture
- vegetables
- vase
- volcano
Sound Box (from page 28)
- "/v/ /v/"
Do You Know? (from page 28)
- "What is the name of your favourite vegetable?" (Learners give their own answer)
Day 1: Look and Say (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 28
- A basket of real vegetables
- Picture cards (or the book pictures) of vulture, vegetables, vase, volcano
Circle Time Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Sit the learners in a circle and sing a hello song together
- Point to the big red "Vv" at the top of page 28 and say "V, v"
- Draw a big "v" in the air with your finger and ask learners to copy you
- Say the sound /v/ slowly, three times: put your top teeth on your bottom lip and hum; learners say it with you
Vegetable Basket (5 minutes)
- Pass the basket of vegetables around the group
- Let every learner hold one and say "vegetable"
- Say together: "/v/ /v/ vegetables"
Look and Say (12 minutes)
- Open page 28 and point to each picture with its label:
- the big bird sitting on a rock: "vulture"
- the pile of vegetables with a big orange pumpkin: "vegetables"
- the red vase with yellow flowers: "vase"
- the mountain with hot red lava: "volcano"
- Learners repeat each word twice
- Play "Point to it": say a word, learners point to the right picture in their book
Volcano Action (6 minutes)
- Learners crouch down low like a mountain
- Count "1, 2, 3" and learners jump up with arms wide and shout "volcano!"
- Then flap arms like big wings and say "vulture"
Wrap-Up (2 minutes)
- Point to the vase and ask: "What does vase start with?" Learners say /v/
- Say all four words together: vulture, vegetables, vase, volcano
Differentiation
- Support: Let shy learners point to pictures instead of saying words; say the word with them
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name the picture when you point, without help
Day 2: Think and Encircle (30 minutes)
Materials
- Textbook page 28
- Pencils or crayons
- The vegetable basket from Day 1
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
- Show page 28 again. Point and say: vulture, vegetables, vase, volcano
- Say the sound together: "/v/ /v/"
- Find the big "V" and the small "v" on the page
Do You Know? (7 minutes)
- Read the question aloud: "What is the name of your favourite vegetable?"
- Go round the circle; each learner names a favourite vegetable
- Hold up the matching vegetable from the basket if you have it
- Say together: "/v/ /v/ vegetables"
Letter in the Air and on the Page (6 minutes)
- Point to the big pink "V" at the bottom of page 28
- Show the stroke for "v": start at the top left, slant down to the bottom, then slant back up to the top right
- Learners draw "v" in the air, then run a finger over the pink "V" in the book
Book Activity: Encircle the V Picture (8 minutes)
- Read the instruction aloud: "Encircle the picture beginning with the letter 'V'."
- Point to the tree and ask: "What is this?" Learners say "tree"
- Point to the vase and ask: "What is this?" Learners say "vase"
- Ask: "Which one starts with /v/?" Learners draw a circle round the vase
- Walk round and check every learner circled the vase
Wrap-Up (4 minutes)
- Play "V for Victory": say a word; learners make a "V" with two fingers if it starts with /v/ (vulture, tree, vase, volcano, vegetables)
- Wave goodbye: "Bye-bye, vulture!"
Differentiation
- Support: Hold the learner's hand to draw the circle; say "vase" together first
- Extension: Ask confident learners to name all four "v" pictures from memory
Teaching Tips
- To say /v/, put the top teeth gently on the bottom lip and make a buzzy hum
- The Do You Know question has no single answer; accept any vegetable learners name
- The book prints "What is name of your favourite vegetable?" Read it aloud as "What is the name of your favourite vegetable?"
