Assessment Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

1. Point to the big "V" and the small "v" when asked
2. Say the sound /v/
3. Name the pictures on page 28: vulture, vegetables, vase, volcano
4. Answer the Do You Know question: name a favourite vegetable
5. Encircle the picture that begins with "V" (vase, not tree)

All assessment for Nursery is oral and observational. Learners are never asked to read or write words.

Formative Assessment

1. Letter Spotting (During Day 1)

• Task: Show three letter cards (V, u, v). Ask: "Where is V? Where is small v?" The learner points to each
• Criteria:
  • Points to big "V" and small "v" without help
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

2. Sound Check (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to the "/v/ /v/" box on page 28 and ask: "What sound does it make?"
• Criteria: Says /v/ clearly, with teeth on the bottom lip
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

3. Picture Naming (During Day 1)

• Task: Point to each picture and ask: "What is this?"
  1. vulture
  2. vegetables
  3. vase
  4. volcano
• Criteria: Names at least 3 out of 4 pictures
• Rating: 4 names / 2-3 names / 0-1 names

4. Do You Know? (During Day 2)

• Task: Ask: "What is the name of your favourite vegetable?"
• Criteria: Names any vegetable
• Rating: Yes / With help / Not yet

5. Encircle Activity Observation (During Day 2)

• Task: Watch the learner do the encircle activity at the bottom of page 28
• Criteria:
  • Names the tree and the vase
  • Draws a circle round the vase
• Rating: Correct / With help / Not yet

Summative Assessment

Oral and Practical Check (one learner at a time, about 3 minutes)

Part A: Letter and Sound (2 marks)

1. Point to "v" on a card with three letters (1 mark)
2. Say the sound of "v" (1 mark)

Part B: Picture Words (4 marks)

• Show the four pictures from page 28. Learner names each one (1 mark each):
  • vulture, vegetables, vase, volcano

Part C: Do You Know? (1 mark)

• Learner names a favourite vegetable (1 mark)

Part D: Odd One Out (3 marks)

• Show pairs of pictures from the book. Learner points to the one that begins with "v" (1 mark each):
  • vase or tree
  • volcano or tree
  • vulture or tree

Total: 10 marks

Remediation Plan

• Learners who score below 5/10 should:
  • Practise the /v/ sound in front of a mirror, teeth on the bottom lip

  • Name vegetables in the kitchen with a parent at home
